Re: What should be changed in the ISO 9001:2014 Standard?

There is no need for an ISO9001:2014 revision because the History channel has been documenting the end of the world on Dec.21, 2012 the past couple weeks. :D
Actually, the World ended December 31st, 1999, 11:59:59PM GST. We've been living a collective trance since then.

Yes, nothing after dark. My internal requirement upper limit is in bed by 8:00PM in the winter, and 9:00PM in summer. Spring and fall have a range of bettween 8 min - 9 max PM. :D

Re: What should be changed in the ISO 9001:2014 Standard?

Now that the amendment of ISO 9001:2008 is done with, hopefully the TC 176 will have the courage to instill significant changes in the next revision of ISO 9001.

I thought we should start a thread so people could suggest possible changes to the standard. We have Cove members that participate in the US TAG and can convey (should they agree) our collective requests.

In my opinion, certain things need to be significantly revised.

The first one is preventive action. The TC 176 should re-phrase the requirements associated with preventive actions, so it can be meaningfully implemented in the real world. At present, the requirement is unclear and difficult to assess compliance against.

Another suggestion I have is for emphasis on process and system effectiveness. 8.2.3, for example, is completely disregarded by many organizations.

Quality economics, a.k.a cost of quality and mandatory review during management reviews is another candidate in my book.

Other ideas?
Keep ISO 9004 separate for good ideas and ISO 9001 for widely accepted good practice. Keep the repository for good ideas so they may become widely accepted good practice by their own merits.

Just three changes to the requirements:

  1. Put preventive action in with data collection and analysis. Preventive action should not follow corrective action in the standard or anywhere else.
  2. Change 5.4.2 and 7.1 to address risk assessment as part of system planning and quality planning.
  3. Add "performance against quality objectives" to management review input in 5.6.2.
That's about it for ISO 9001:2014.

I still contend that we should have a version of ISO 9001 that specifically addresses the needs of service organizations.
All an organization has to do is replace "service" with "product" in their standard (heaven forbit that we should mark on the standard).

In the absence of a specific standard for service organizations (which I agree would be a good idea) it wouldn't be too hard to require a documented procedure for 7.3 and explicitly exclude the requirement where service organizations are concerned.

If an organization designs courses that they deliver, then 7.3 would be applicable.

I don't know why any standard is needed if we can trust our suppliers and customers can trust us to do the right things. Basically, if you can't trust a company, why are you doing business with them at all. If there are issues then mutual team work can resolve those. I have been in quality related functions for a long time and "we didn't need no stinkin standards" to do the right things.

Re: What should be changed in the ISO 9001:2014 Standard?

ISO 9001:2008 said:
The management responsible for the area being audited shall ensure that any necessary corrections and corrective actions are taken without undue delay to eliminate detected nonconformities and their causes. Follow-up activities shall include the verification of the actions taken and the reporting of verification results.
This should be corrected to say the same thing it says in 8.5.2. We shouldn't verify the actions taken, we should verify the effectiveness of the actions taken.

Been there done that. ANSI SPPE - worked off a quality manual. Each company that came in wanted OUR manual to state what THEY wanted to say. Problem is when two different clients wanted two different things, we had to choose which one we wanted to do business with. :frust: I WAS GLAD TO SEE A 'STANDARD' COME ALONG.

Exactamundo.

Thank heavens for Standards. Much better with a Standard than without. Without them, Ralph, your 'right thing' may be someone else's wrong one. I agree trust is a great thing and I value it highly. But in anything beyond a small tribe or community, I think it's a bit naive to rely on it solely.
