Our new VP wants to start having weekly staff meeting and wants a standard agenda.

Anyone have an idea of what should be covered in a weekly staff meeting?

Just looking for input.

Hello Jerry,

Assuming that you will have a 1-hour meeting (longer is a waste of time), select the topics carefully.

Some suggestions:

  • Welcome by VP
  • Update on previously agreed upon action items ("old business")
  • Review process performance and necessary actions to improve by Process Owners
  • Audit results (Safety, Quality, Environment)
  • Customer issues (Good, Bad, Ugly)
  • Decisions and Actions + Commitments
  • Meeting review
  • Adjourn

Keep minutes, so that this counts as Management Review!

Hope this helps.

Stijloor.

P.S. I believe that you and I have met in a previous life.....

Re: Staff Meetings

You might also want to include production schedules and maintenance schedules for the week. Also, this week we described what the staffing needs are for the 4th of July holiday.

It would be a good idea to consider what day to have the meeting. Monday, mid-morning works well for us.

Whatever you do, keep these meetings KISS (Keep It Short and Sweet)

He wants the meeting he should provide the agenda he wants to see.

I hate weekly staff meetings. I have never been in a good weekly staff meeting.

I work much better with impromptu meetings to address issues as the occur, wit much wider spread out strategy meetings.

This usually happens when new bosses come in. They start with weekly meetings, then it becomes fornightly .... then monthly .... then a suggestion comes why we cannot merge with the Management Review Meetings etc, etc, etc.

With all due respect ScottK, jkittle was asking about ideas to be covered in the weekly staff meeting, not necessarily what we like or dislike about such meetings.....I do not think that jkittle will go back to his boss repeating what you suggested. He may not be in the meeting at all. :D

Although there are times when the minutiae of a weekly staff meeting can be boring (does not really apply to me) the information given there comes in handy for me. It makes sure that one group knows where the other is headed. It also give us a quick snapshot of how the company is doing. Finally, it helps me to keep quality issues "front and center", especially where more than one department is involved on an issue. With emails, IMs, etc. there is still no substitute for meeting face to face. Just IMHO, of course.

fair enough on my feelings on the subject... still, the guy/gal who wants the meeting to happen ought to give the agenda.
If I was told "Have staff meetings, tell me what you'll cover", I'd sure give my boss a WTH look and tell him, "You want the meeting, what do you want covered".
But I'm not shy about stuff like that.
