Your approach will likely vary greatly depending on the management team backing you. If you have a great management team that supports continuous improvement and good quality principles, you will have an easier time. If you have a management team that views quality as a necessary evil for their business, you will have to learn how to apply the above principles in the least burdensome approach to get anything done.

As a small company, learning to drive the IATF requirements and implement into QMS. Knowing the requirements and implementation are two different things. But stay true to the course and it will go fine.

Knowledge of your companies process's no point preaching if you don't know the practice. You don't need to be an expert but a relatable knowledge is a great help in understanding potentially why something is failing instead of just saying its wrong change it.

For someone seeking to move up from a quality engineer to a quality manager, other than people management, what skills become more important as a quality manager?
There are two "skills" that come immediately to mind: the ability to deal decisively with ambiguity and the related ability and willingness to make decisions while others are waffling or avoiding it.
I quite like the response from @Jim Wynne , although I would rank the following as immediately more important than his (excellent) response: A successful Quality Manager in order to make an effective decision, has to have the ability to immediately recognize not just the area (of quality) they are working in, but also the level (within the QMS) they are working in. They should be able and willing to articulate these two taxonomic classifications for every decision they make. I recognize that there will occasionally be circumstances that call for ad hoc decisions, but these should be very rare in a QMS is working correctly.

I'm sure that most of us can share anecdotes about ineffective Quality Managers. In my career, I've been frustrated both by "waffling" and by 'Shoot, Ready, Aim."
