Jim & Randy,

I'm sure you don't mean to convey that one shouldn't ask 'simple' questions here and if someone has mistakenly asked it anyway, that shouldn't be replied?
I'm not speaking for Randy, but all I did was illustrate his remark in a lame attempt at humor. No comment on the discussion on my part was made or intended.

From this discussion, one thing I couldn't follow why a guide should matter so much in an audit if the 'guide' isn't the auditee him/herself? What crucial role does a guide play except showing the auditor the way to the area and getting him/her introduced with the auditee? Rest is to be taken care by the auditee of the area concerned, IMO.
While reading all your quotes, I saw myself (German, able to speak English!) in the Italian heat treatment facility I once was. If my guide would had be gone, I would be LOST!!! Speaking very little Italian, and the buildings where really confusing!! It would have taking me 30 min, to find a way back to the admin-desk for sure!!! And I think after this time of walking, I had made the desicion to cancel the audit at once, Bad mods.

But normally, this is the way we handle it internally and my expierence at suppliers, there are two persons, one from Quality and one (changing) from the audited department, so if the Quality guy are called off, the other can bring me back or to the next department on my plan.

And I think in most companies, it is also not aloud, to leave guest alone, so the guide shall be come back soon, or find someone to car for you, or he will get trouble.

Greetings TamTom

In discrete circumstances like the one you just mentioned, a guide is anyhow necessary.

Surely a guest must receive due respect and attention as well. Throughout this discussion, I personally maintained that someone (but not necessarily a 'guide' per se) is always there to take care of the auditor, whether an auditee or someone else from within. If one can find someone else to care for the auditor, it should be fine enough.

Thanks.

Nice example of why it's necessary for an auditor to always have someone assigned to guide them - whatever one calls that role, it's an essential one.

To those of more limited experience and/or who see things only from the point of view of their own work environment, it may be hard for them to see the point of such a role. Thanks for your excellent example.

 Who are you advising?

If an auditor who's been abandoned/left alone by their guide, how can they possibly even KNOW what the safety procedures are, let alone be sure they're not breaching them? The company remains responsible for the auditor while on their premises - leaving them alone and at any safety risk would be a dereliction of their duty.

I was merely pointing out to the unwary that to walk off from a last known location in someone’ else’s premises is fraught with risk.

It’s not good to breach anyone’s safety procedure, the auditee organisation or that of one’s own organisation accept in an emergency of course, in which case one would follow other staff of the auditee organisation. It always invites allegations of irresponsible and unsafe behaviour from one party or the other.

The best way to deal with this potentiality is to cover it at the entry meeting and agree on actions to take in such a circumstance.

I would have thought that an expereinced auditor would do this as a matter of course.

cheers

Perhaps not at the entry meeting, but certainly at the time the guide/escort is called away - it would seem prudent to ask, "How the hell do I get back without getting lost or injured?"
