I believe this information could be recorded in addition to the actual physical location. I think you still need to record some information about where the device is physically located (and/or maybe who is responsible for it). Otherwise, it will be a nightmare trying to find it.
So yes, record the physical location, and possibly record the inspection area.
...The location according to me is at which area of inspection, the instrument is used (Incoming / inprocess / Final) and the parameters checked by that instrument in that location.
