When Should I Implement ISO 9001 in a Brand New Facility?

One word of advice - make sure you have a solid budget to make your ISO 9001 compliant QMS happen ASAP. Too often "things Quality" suffer by the wayside when new brick & mortar is involved! Cost overruns, revised plans, contractor labor troubles...anything can happen to eat up your budget.

In my opinion, I would start as soon as possible, especially a start-up.

Are you going to consider a Corporate Registration?
Yes. The company might be a "sister" corporation or it might be under the same Corporate name. Don't know yet. I would like to have it under the same registration though. Top Management is not including me yet. I've been poking around to learn on my own. It won't be a mfg/machining facility. It will be a permanent mold process with heat treating also under the same roof. I've heard that maybe 25 people will run it - that's it.

This is new to me....I'm not even sure where to begin.

Crusader,

Check out the IAF website at the following link: http://www.iaf.nu/ and look at Guide 62 regarding Corporate Registration and see if this could apply.

I'm not in a position to do anything that you suggest. That is all TOP MGMT decisions. I will be called in when they want me....

Sooner is Better...

I agree heartily with everyone else. I had the pleasure:lol: of being the the new QM for a new facility, which was the relocation of an existing ISO certified system (1994 version). The registrar had a requirement to recertify within one month of the relocation, so in they came despite efforts to delay by us. We didn't get through the first two hours without three major NC's (couldn't produce records of incoming acceptance from the old location for the current materials, etc., etc.). Got to choose between surrendering the cert. right then  or suffer a full registration audit within the following two weeks. The Pres chose to surrender, and we started the rebuilding process of all the systems that should have been but weren't.

So I agree: avoid the no system / bad habits / lone rangers / etc. pitfalls from the get-go. Visualize how you can make the QMS work for you as a BMS ( for your business of molding / moldmaking / heat-treating). Good luck!:applause: :cfingers:

Thank you to everyone who put in their :2cents: . I was informed by Top Mgmt today that I am not to start any ISO business until the new site is up and running (after the bugs are worked out).

There you have it. I'm just curious what your repsonses would be to the above news. I don't have any weight to stand on. The law has been laid down.

But...can you make sure the procedures, documents and records they are using is compliant? That would help get everyone used to those.
