Where can one get trained in belts and lean manufacturing?

I am wondering if there are classes or programs available that one can take to get the training needed to achieve belts or six-sigma or 5S or Lean?

Most of what I have read here pertain to a company performing this training within the company. What about those companies that do not have this yet?

What if an individual would like to pursue a career in this area?

How would one go about achieving this?:read:

I haven't been looking, but I am sure there are outside courses. Surely one of the others here can help.

For Lean, my first choice would be the joint program between Ohio State and Productivity Inc. I've been dealing with Productivity Inc. for about a decade now, and I haven't run into many other providers that are as good as they are.

Other potential providers are University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee, and the University of Michigan. The University of Alabama offers training through their extension services and I've heard some decent things about it, but I haven't seen any of the material or seen the accomplishments by any of the participants.

There are lots of people offering training, but the quality of that training and the ability to present the information in a way that can be understood and assimilated is key. Getting trained, going after a new position; only to land it and then not live up the expectations is a sure career killer.

I should be a little more specific.....

I don't want to travel. I have a job and I want to improve my skills/training to either grow here or somewhere else in the St. Joe/Kansas City area.

I guess the training needs to be located in this area or through some online course or through some other way by taking a week or two for one section of courses quarterly or biannually.....

My company covers most of schooling but taking off work to do it isn't an option unless it is something like a week or 2 course.

If taking outside training and having to travel, it would be next year before I would be able to start. Online or in area is a different story....

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Wayne,

:thanx:

I appreciate the info.

This company has a lot of potential. If I would have had more schooling I would have probably been the corporate CI/MFG Eng for 7 facilities. I don't want that opportunity to slip by again....

Lean is harder to do online since it is critical to get your hands dirty, whereas Six Sigma is easier to grab onto. I've had some employees take the University of Michigan Online Six Sigma program and was satisfied with their ability to perform after the course.

There are some online courses that should help build a foundation. Two possibilities, and only because I've dealt with them and they have solid reputations:

Productivity Inc. Online Learning

Gemba Academy

These might be a good place to start if time and distance are a factor. Just to clarify something. I'm not an employee (contract or otherwise) with Productivity, but I have been invited to be a contributor to their blog they are starting. So if anyone is curious why I seem to promote Productivity Inc. as a good resource, its exactly for that reason. They are very good at what they do. I'd also encourage everyone to check out Jon's blog at Gemba Panta Rei.

We have used online training materials from Resource Engineering for our employees training. Class room instruction based or hands on workshop based training are more suitable for Six sigma and Lean (specifically value stream mapping). However these online training provide good value for the money. Provides adequate foundation on the subject topics. I know some major organizations use this site as a corporate training tool.

Regards,
Govind.
Note: I have no financial interests with Resource Engineering. I have Beta reviewed some of their courses in the past.

Some company here in Missouri sent a letter early this year offering help with locating and entering classes/courses in this area. They stated that the state would cover some of the expenses and they would help with that as well.

The courses were $12k or more. My boss and I did not read further and trashed it. Was this a mistake? :frust:

Probably not. Most of the state stuff goes through the MEP's (Manufacturing Extension Partnerships) that are governed by NIST. Their costs for training wouldn't come close to that amount.

A company that has impressed me with their Six Sigma and Lean training is QAI. You might want to take a look at the website: trainingforquality.com.
