Where does 5S technique fit into ISO 9001?

Q

QAMTY

Hi everybody

In your opinion, when it?s implemented the 5S?s technique in ISO 9001
what is the best option to include it?

Could be added as another process? with Kpi?s, or just as an improvement project?

The idea that I have in mind it is to add it as a new process, developing a procedure with their needed formats, also defining its KPI?s.

Thanks for tyour feedback

As you said that the 5S is a technique, Look at where it is meaningful in the PDCA of all your activities.
This, the 5S as a culture has to be implemented, maintained and improved upon. So it becomes a continual improvement process.

We should see the 5S in place as an integrated process of your several processes. If it is not integrated, it is a burden and no one likes to take undue load.

QAMTY,

Clause 6.4 requires a work environment that is conducive to quality and 5S can help with this.

Work environment influences all processes and is not a process itself.

However, the mechanics of 5S can be reduced to a process for which you can establish a procedure.

But it's probably better for the organization's leaders to learn and live the 5S ethos first. Then engage the employees is making 5S a reality. Then, perhaps, document the essential controls in a procedure.

Once 5S becomes a way of life you can archive the documented procedure.

I would say clause 6.4 and 7.5.5 could be useful for you as well as 8.4 .There is a lot of way to present 5S system as any part of process.

The idea that I have in mind it is to add it as a new process, developing a procedure with their needed formats, also defining its KPI?s." Of course you can add it as separate process (system) with KPI , but you have to develop whole pointing system with auditing .According to my best knowledge it is better to set this system as improvement and measure and evaluate "KPI" of the process not of system e.g. effectivity or time saving, before - after implementation.
Just my opinion .

Hi :bigwave:

I agree with Andy, we have 5S along with Kaizen as part of continuous improvement.

There's a general idea that good product will be the result of processes that do not represent excessive burden. That is, the organization does not go broke while producing good product/services.

5S can contribute to the effort by eliminating time waste in terms of time used to access tools and materials, in support of overall efficiency.

To measure 5S progress you either can have checklists or reset log and develop scoring system with these. Alternatively you can set goals in number of 5S projects to conduct in a set period of time and review completion rate.
Both are as Valid but the later is more fruitful as you will see the result of 5S. It is about ORDER. Everything has its place. Items that are not used often is stowed away and Items needed are close at hand, and also have tool fit for purpose.
Teach the organisation to Live, Breath and Exhale 5S.
Good luck.
