Where does Lean Six Sigma Originate?

Dear All

There is lots of research stating the history of where and when Lean (Toyota etc) and Six Sigma (Motorola GE etc) came from but when and where did Lean Six Sigma start???? Also who coined the phrase, struggling to answer this question as part of my research degree. I think it must have been sometime in the 1990's but can't find any evidense!

Any help is really appreciated

As 6 sigma was dying (read less and less companies getting into it) a new concept was needed in order to generate money...Thus the Lean 6 Sigma...

Even if the package was around for many, many years, coining a new term is important in order to sell the package. Six sigma was around for ages before being called that and the case is the same for Lean 6S.

It's sad but this is how I see it...Sorry if I offend anyone....my apologies....

I fully second this opinion! Correction: fact. :applause:

The Lean 6 Sigma was coined by ASQ who originally had a 6 Sigma certification program (to be read 'a good source of income'). As Sorin said, 6 Sigma started to fade as 'the thing to do', so ASQ was faced with losing interest in 6 Sigma certifications. Therefore they coined the term Lean 6 Sigma in order to imply the integration of Lean principles and 6 Sigma that drive even more results for the companies and practitioners (and therefore maintain interest in the certification program).

Interesting enough is that SME started a certification program for Lean practitioners way before the 6 Sigma started to fade and the ASQ re-branding. Now you have two professional societies that offer similar certifications. Although the SME Lean certification is more thorough and valuable, the Lean 6 Sigma certification is more popular in the market and with employers. :bonk:

To this day there are still many executives who have no idea what 6 Sigma is and sign up for it blindly based on a good sales pitch. :nope:

An opinion labeled as a fact is still an opinion.

Despite the hype and profiteering that have occurred, Lean Six Sigma does work and is effective. It is not the only game in town. Other tools and methods do work as well, but this does not denigrate the effectiveness of lean six sigma.
