Where should Validation and/or Testing Report to? Engineering? Quality?

Hello. I work for a fairly new and fast growing organization and currently as Quality Manager I have the following people reporting to me:

Quality Engineers
CMM/Inspector
Validation Engineers
Test Equipment Engineers

It is my thought that there should be a separate testing group, not only for engineering development testing, but as well as for those who handle formal validation testing. Since our organization is growing and developing there is opportunity to make a change if it is warranted.

I'm curious who other companies are organized in this regard. Would love some feedback as well on pros/cons as I am currently discussing this with a few directors so would like some additional perspectives.

Hello toucan,

I am an engineering tech within our companies Validation group. Because of unique capablities within our group, we are closely aligned with R&D, engineering, and production in order to rapidly respond and meet what ever testing may be required but we report directly to the Director of Quality.

This works well for us and prevents any actual or perceived conflict of interest.

Validation is more a team task and is perhaps an event rather than routine activity. If you are talking about testing as a routine activity, then perhaps it fits well reporting to Quality.

You could have it as a seperate group but would have it report into Quality.
