Hello Everyone,

Is there a website that I can download free medical device symbols?
Also, I am looking for your recommendation on which label software to purchase for a low volume medical device product. Thanks in advance

Hi,

Search on internet. One US FDA guidance document is "Use of Symbols on Labels and in Labeling of In Vitro Diagnostic Devices Intended for Professional Use", which is freely available for public.

You can also find others from the internet search (GHTF, WHO, EU MEDDEV Guidance docs, etc...).

But I am not sure of the clarity of the symbols, if you want to use for designing labels for your products!

Regards,
Sreenu

You may want to invest in ISO EN 980 - Graphical symbols for use in the labelling of medical devices. There is an electronic version available with all the symbols ready for use.
It is not free, but it is cheaper than trying to find the symbols by yourself and also provides a better quality for your labeling proces. :bigwave:

From my experience, if you run an image search on Google (or the like), you will get a vast range of options for almost any known symbol, in terms of size, quality, file format, style etc. Most of them will not be officially endorsed, nevertheless there are instances where you don't actually need it. Helped me many times.

Can't help you with specific "labeling software", but probably any text / graphics editor would do to a reasonable extent.

Edit: If you grab something off a website, make sure it's not copyrighted, of course...

I find that it is possible to get most of the symbols off the internet; frequently they are poor quality, so I spend a little time tracing them in adobe illustrator so that I have a high quality vector format.

Select graphical symbols, then put in say 'serial number' for the search term. You get bmp and png after clicking on the symbol and do a 'save as'. If you want to check out every symbol under sun (believe me there are a lot, 2884 to be precise - you just try to guess what they are before hovering over them to get a meaning!) type in "ISO 7000:2012". Enjoy - if that is the right word!:read:

In this thread, we'd discussed that ISO holds copyright on these symbols. If this is the case, then what you suggest may not be advisory, as to use symbols acquired in this manner in actual device labelling would presumably be a copyright infringement.

Can anyone else confirm the copyrighted nature of these symbols?

If so, it appears the ISO store is selling the symbols for $30 each...

I think it's a question for a specialist IP attorney, and as such the answer also depends on the "where"s.

Some of the symbols are actually long-standing traditions. I doubt that ISO can claim copyright over the actual graphical shapes, or their association with a given meaning, in such cases. More likely their copyright pertains to a very specific symbol design, as embodied in specific graphics files or in detailed (fully dimensioned) drawings.

Actually there are two (or more) separate IP aspects to it:
1. The graphical design
2. The association with a meaning
