Where to Place Process Maps in our Documentation?

#1
I am curious to hear where you have placed your process maps. I was initially going to make them part of the quality manual but decided that the less in there the better because everytime one is updated I will have to reissue the Qualtiy Manual. Then I thought I would place them seperately in with our controlled documents. Now I am thinking that am going to place them in our procedures maunal that way they are seperated for new revisions yet placed in a more appropriate place. It's late and it's Monday...I may be making an issue out of nothing but I thought if I had some different ideas on this issue, it may save me some time later.

I keep it in the list of documented information and control it there. And just give reference to the document in the Quality manual.

We keep process documents in PDF format on the intranet file server. There are separate folders for Processes, Procedures, Forms and Work Instructions. We get people in the habit of retrieving the latest version off the network instead or relying on the months-old paper copy or the copy on their hard drive. We keep a parallel folder hierarchy for original (edittable) copies, with restricted access. There is another folder where in-progress, unreleased drafts are kept separate. For safe keeping, we discard outdated versions into an archive folder where we could retrieve old revisions if needed.

If the process map shows the interactions between members of the process team while showing who does what to fulfill the process objective (and link to any needed forms and how to docs) why not call a documented procedure?

You may find they are preferred by users in place of textual procedures,

As John says, even better if you can save them as html rather than pdfs, so that the supporting documents (and other related processes) can be accessed from the maps. And if you structure your on-line system logically, it can be your "quality manual" (although I would describe it as your "management system").
