Which is completed first? MSA or Capability Study

This isn't a chicken and egg scenario.... you need a good measurement system to show you have good capability... Though I have seen and been many places that have capability studies but no MSA program.

Thank you all for your valued input. I have been involved in picking up the baton on legacy MD products together with NPI and I was astounded that no MSA was completed. Lately I have assisted our Customer Service/Business Dev Manager advocate and quote for MSA and the customer is 100% on board. Some ME's tsk tsk but they are amazed at the variability in the fixturing once the legacy gaging is put to the test.

I have found that MSA is just not often used in small/medium sized companies unless they need to do some in order to land a contract. And then the scope will be limited.

Unfortunately this not unusual. I have seen this with custom fixtures, simple hand held gauges and sophisticated complex measurement systems. The causes range from operator technique, sample prep, loose fixtures, geometry of the part, etc. What you don’t know can and will hurt you.
Perform the test (correctly) and then you will know.
