Whittling down procedures and processes

Cheer up! You may well find that most of the employees would be happy to see that beast trimmed down.

I have run across that more than once.

One of the companies had been told by their auditor several times that they needed to trim down their excessive documentation. He was elated when he found out they had.

What a lot of helpful and supportive answers in just 24 hours. Thank you.

There seems to be two suggested course of action, either start from scratch or audit the current documentation with the help of colleagues. I am going to do some more reading on this forum first.

I think you really hit the nail on the head when you say ?it really sounds like you would benefit from a little training and understanding first...? Helmut Jiling

I?ve been given this task because I have a lot of common sense and I?m practical about stuff like this, but I don?t know if that?s enough here. I know the company and the ?way things work? pretty well, but I don?t know much about quality management. My chances of getting outside training are slim, I?ve picked up bits from my predecessor and our quality manager but maybe I will have to work things out for myself.

Re: Cheer up – I don’t feel pessimistic Big Jim. I think most of my colleagues would like to see this trimmed down and organised properly. I think I would like to start from that perspective with them – lets only have whats necessary. There are a hardcore group of people who don’t think that anything like this is worthwhile – “why don’t we just ‘do’ things”.

But on the whole I feel its an interesting project for me :)

Never ceases to amaze me that companies will spend thousands trying to pick things up themselves, rather than spend a small amount on proper training... Why did we ever let accountants take over management decisions...?

I don't generally do this, but if you wish, I will offer you a little private phone consult...because a few pointers will set you on a better path. But, the main points are in my post. If you follow those three steps, you will be on your way.

If you prefer a little free phone time, and you are based in USA, I will be available after 7pm (EST) the next couple evenings. You can find the contact phone number on my website home page (www.jilling.com). I don't want to post the number here...

I mentioned this elsewhere, but a good consultant can do wonders. We were fortunate enough to come across an ISO consultant with a lean background. It's been worth every dime.
