Who can be the Management Representative? Independent contractor?

After reading the more recent posts I believed I had the answer to my question or concern; then I read 'little-cee's post, and I knew I had it for sure.

Prior to ISO 9001:2000, my title was or I was referred to simply as "Engineer" since I am the only ‘one’ in the company of about 100 employees. Given that 'those' responsibilities have not gone away with the advent of ISO 9001:2000, my title now could be stated as "Engineer/Management Representative."

Based on what you have said, this should be fine, and I won't worry about.

:) Thank you all - I now can concentrate better on the task at hand.

Hi All,

This may or may not contribute to this thread but in ALL of the audits I have been involved with ,and it is many, noone has EVER asked me who the Managment Representative was. I think the auditors have always assumed it was me because I was leading them around.
Generally, at the companies I have worked for, the MR has been a token figure Head and I have done all of the work anyway.
I agree with Randy and Wes let it slide.

I think that with the change from ISO 1994 to 2000, and QS to TS, the MR moniker is losing the glitz (That's sparkle and status Claes) . . . I think that there is more emphasis (In the standards anyway) on TOP MANAGEMENT taking a bigger role in the QMS.

In many companies, if you are on salary, you are considered a part of management by default.

In Ingenario's case. . . I feel for him. . . Have been doing the TS conversion thing in a company now as a contractor/consultant. . . very little support if any. I implemented ISO-900:2000 in a startup company as Director of Quality Systems (Also a contract position). Got more support. . . and more work too. . . but the pay was also better. . . but still no benefits. . .

You are not supposed to ask that!

Not to be 'politically correct', but you both did - really. Your approach (in this case) appeared to be more to the point, and Wes's more 'understanding.' Little-Cee was very good, and then Taz's comment was right on cue.

I guess I am from the old school (58yo*) and although I have contracted (hired) IC's many times in the past for the companies at which I worked (as a real employee), and have worked as an IC myself even before now, I was unaware than an IC would really be considered part of management. Times do change...

One unrelated question, if I may:
What does the 'TS' in ISO/TS 16949 mean or stand for?
