Who is aware of TWI's (Training Within Industry) role in Lean at Toyota?

This is a new topic for me. I'm no expert on TPS but I'm still a little surprised at your statement, "Toyota claims is foundational to TPS." I've read the basic books on TPS and don't recall TWI. What is it's major function?

Many books on TPS mention it only in passing. Jeff Liker and John Shook are two that I know are aware of TWI's influence on TPS and make passing statements in their writings.
