Who will follow Deming-Juran-Crosby in their footsteps?

Friends,

The great quality teachers are no longer with us. Agree or disagree with their teachings and principles, they left a tremendous legacy.

Who of the current quality teachers will take (or have taken) their place?

Who do you think and why?

Stijloor.

I have thought about that and can not come up with any names. Perhaps Six sigma and other areas are too new to have great names.

Other greats include Shingo (Zero defects), Ohno (TPS), Ishikawa (fishbone), Taguchi (quality loss, DOE), Feigenbaum (TPM).

This maybe an opportunity for our Cove to create a Quality Hall of Fame as part of the Wiki that Marc talked about last week.

The legacies of Juran and Deming are twofold: they demonstrated that basic statistical principles may be used to great advantage in manufacturing (Shewhart's original concept), and they spent their long lives promoting the idea. There's really no way to replace either, and it's probably not even sensible to expect it. Einstein's ideas didn't replace Newton's; they expanded upon them. The famous quote from Newton seems apropos here: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Each generation builds upon the knowledge and understanding of previous generations. Shewhart, Deming and Juran built the platform we're standing on, and in that sense they can't be replaced.

Nice one, Jim. Well stated.

I was basically thinking along those lines too. I also think they will be the fathers of the Quality movement.

In my mind it is similar to Adam Smith the father of Economics, to an extent. However, many have come after him including Keynes, Friedman, etc. Freud might be considered the father of Pyschology, but look how far the understanding of human behavior has advanced.

They are the platform, upon which advancement and knowledge is to be built. That knowledge will come in the form of more refined approaches to the general philosophies and more clear contingency information.

Well said Jim. :applause:

Part of greatness is a sense of readiness for the greatness. When the gurus presented their statistical methods, industry was ready for them. I sense no such hunger now. Jack Welch has tried by promoting 6S, but the community is split on the application, so that disqualifies him as a visionary. Peter Drucker was known as an intellect in matters of business, but his philosophy is too Deming-like for modern business people to embrace.

We can look at the art masters for a parallel. Many of their works did not gain appeal until after the artists' death.
