Why are John Deere suppliers required ISO/TS

Re: John deer

Kees,

How would the CB (and perhaps IATF - IAOB) respond?
I am just thinking about the applicability of ISO/TS 16949:2002....
If the John Deere requirement is for TS certification, then the supplier is out of luck. Agricultural "automotive" products are explicitly excluded from being eligible for TS certification. No rule-abiding CB would certify them.

If the requirement is "just" for TS 16949 compliance, then no problem.

From http://www.ts16949.com/, et. al.

ISO/TS 16949 is applicable to sites of the organization where customer-specified parts, for production and/or service, are manufactured.

Manufacturing means: Process of making or fabricating - a) Production materials, b) Production or Service Parts, c) Assemblies or d) Heat treating, Welding, Painting, Plating or other Finishing Services For Cars, Trucks (Light, Medium & Heavy), Buses, Motorcycles.

ISO/TS 16949 is not applicable for Industrial, Agricultural, Off-Highway (Mining, Forestry, Construction etc.)

The IATF has asked all registrars to assure that TS16949:2002 (TS-2) registrants meet the following applicability requirements:

1. The TS-2 definition of supplier applicability must apply to the organization seeking registration*1;
2. One of the registered organization’s customers must list TS-2 as one of the alternatives of a required standard to which its suppliers must comply;
3. Any tier may be registered if it has a direct customer (or potential customer) that requires either compliance or 3rd party registration to TS-2 or QS-9000; and
4. Evidence of being a potential supplier to a customer requiring TS-2 (or QS-9000, etc.) could include an RFQ issued to the organization, or the organization being on the bid list of the TS-2 subscribing customer.

From JDS-G223:
John Deere encourages our supply chain to become compliant to the International Automotive Management Standard, ISO/TS 16949. This manual represents the minimum requirement for John Deere. John Deere units may require registration to more stringent standards. Many of the activities referenced in this manual are further explained in the AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group) manuals, such as Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). It is recommended that suppliers obtain copies of the AIAG manuals. John Deere units will continue to move towards the requirements of ISO/TS 16949 and further embrace the philosophies of continuous improvement. Through executing the proper quality planning activities, John Deere and our supply base will be able to install control measures to eliminate the issues that lead to customer dissatisfaction.

back in the day...late 90's....Deere and Case were the two biggest customers pushing the plant where I worked to register to the QS standard. Even though we supplied as 2 and 3rd tier to automotive, it was the large farm equipment manufacturers that were interested in the QS methodology, it looks like they just followed through when the standard upgraded.

We just had an audit from John Deere in our facility. Thier customer requirements document is loosely based on the format of the ISO/TS 16949 standard, but they are more stringent in some areas (e.g. calibration of gauges and gauge families).

They do not require ISO/TS 16949 3rd party registration. They just want their John Deere procedure to be followed.

Does anyone out there sell to John Deer? Just got a look at their quality manual and they "strongly" request that their suppliers have ISO/TS. HUH? Sorry, thought TS was automotive only.:biglaugh:
If a supplier is suppying to JOHN DEER in addition to some other customer in automotive supply chain then only he can obtain TS 16949 certification.
Non automotive suppliers are not eligible to obtain TS certification.
John Deer can specify TS 16949 certification to its suppliers
