Why did ISO assign the number 16949 to TS 16949? Why not 123456

Can i know why they give TS 16949? Why dont they use 123456, 1, 6, or something like that? Is there any rationale behind 16949?

I think it was just serial order--there was some other, perhaps unrelated Technical Specification 16948 that chronologically preceded 16949.

In other words, there should be atleast 16948 Other Technical specification!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, I was told by a CB it was just a Technicial Specification number next in line to be issued. Maybe also a sequence designation?

Thanks a lot for all who tried to help me. So in short what we are saying here is it is just another number that chronologically proceed. There are specifications like AD12, TA1, TC 121, TS 12, ..........TS16949
Am i right on the interpretation.

It's a serial number, randomly applied (random in the sense that some other specification could have been 16949) that has no meaning in and of itself.

As per my source of knowledge, It might be right or wrong, I am not sure.
All international standards are managed in GENEVA. There is a long list of stanrds for different categories i.e.
14000 for environment
18000 for Safety
similarly 16000 for automotive
949 is serial no for quality standrd in Geneva record.
