Help I'm new at this.
Going for AS9100C Cert. Why do I have to rev change my ASL (Approved Supplier List) everytime I add or remove a supplier??

Re: ASL Rev Levels

Hi Mlaurie, and welcome to The Cove Forums. :bigwave:

The purpose of revision control for any document is so that people can be sure that they are using the latest version of the document. There are different kinds of revision control though. For many documents, particularly ones that don't change often, a revision letter or number may be assigned which increments up every time a change is made. For an ASL (I'm guessing you mean Approved Supplier List) the revision can be as simple as the date of the last change.

Welcome!:bigwave: The short answer is, because adding or removing a supplier is a revision (change) of your list. If someone performing a purchasing function doesn't know something changed, he might purchase from a supplier that was removed. As Howste already suggested, I just change the rev date, archive the old one, and notify the affected funtions that there was a revision to the list - that way, if someone has a printed copy, they know to toss it and get the latest.

Plus - if a purchase was made while a supplier was on the ASL, but you have a customer or CB auditor inquire about it after the supplier was removed, you can show him that the supplier was on the ASL at the time of the purchase.

Re: ASL Rev Levels

Is there a way to add a supplier temporarily (one that I may need for a year or so) to avoid the rev change when added and then the rev change when removed?? This creates considerable work in 4.2.3 4.2.4 & 7.4.1.b (AS9100C). I don’t think I can write a procedure around 741. Thanks

If you have trepidations about making revision changes, it probably means the process for doing it is too complicated. This is a single document and adding/removing suppliers should be a simple process.

Re: ASL Rev Levels

I agree with Jim. Revising the ASL should be the simplest part of the process. You should have a defined process with methods to qualify new suppliers. You should define who has the authority to add them. Once the qualification is done and approved, someone with authority can update the list and reissue it.

1. Create a category "E" under evaluation, after a period which you define (as 12months?) your process says that you Must incorporate in AVL- good performance or de-select them.
2. Use the date as revision as suggested
3. Watermark the AVL (I assume its a dbase or s/sht) with "Printed copies are uncontrolled, for latest revision see x//:xx/xxxx "

K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid)

Oh and don't write procedures, map a process
