Why do 'we' and ?our? QMS?s stop working? What are the Failure Modes?

Lucinda,

I guess your bosses didn't see this news snippet, huh?

Tough economic times may require hard decisions by management for the survival of the organization. Too often, the first solution seems to be cutting costs by reducing the payroll.
Business results can be very sensitive to minor improvements in performance. For example, the Institute of Directors (IoD) reported in Business Excellence that a 1% boost in efficiency has a typical profit improvement of 1.9%, the same as for a 1% payroll reduction. However, quality programs that reduce costs or waste by 1% typically have a 7.9% increase in profits.
Managers, are you listening? Improved quality should be an integral part of your strategy.

Lucinda, my two cents worth. The same thing happened to me over a year ago. But, I ended up with the best job I have ever had, not quite as much money but much less stress. Hope it works out well for you, it seems like managers just don't care about people at all anymore.

Lucinda,

If you want to take that vacation in Trinidad & Tobago (can I advertise my country in the Cove? :p ) just drop me a line. The weather is cooler than Texas, I'm told.

Look at it as your opportunity for "continual improvement" (your stress level should be reduced if nothing else :D).

Stick with Quality - people are optional.

Hmmm, what was the topic of this thread????

Oh yeah - I've seen companies struggling to be certified still struggling after others which have started the certification process after them become certified; Management Commitment isn't sufficient in itself, but I haven't seen a certified company that is really quality-oriented without it.

Hey Lucinda,

Hope you are hanging in there okay. Just a quick suggestion -- if you are an ASQ member you can probably contact the local section and get e-mail updates of job openings in your geographical area. They do it as a free employment service in many areas. Good luck and keep your head up.

Hang in there Lucinda

By the way, did you ever mention what company you worked for? I want to make sure I don't buy any of their product.

No, don't know that I ever came right out with it. It was on some of the things I posted and there were other industry clues. Company was Canyon Offshore. Not very likely that you will be buying their services or products unless you do offshore exploration work. Companies like BP, Heerama, Tyco, Coflexip, etc. hire them.

Check out the website at www.canyonrov.com. In the archived press releases you'll see the announcement from when they hired me. Titled along the lines of how they were showing commitment to quality by the appointment of a fulltime quality manager. I wish I could hack in there and post one that says "Canyon cuts quality to save money" !

Mike,

No, not a member. I wanted to join and had mentioned it to my boss but it never happened. Think they would still help if I cross my heart promise that I'll join when I get the new job??

Lucinda,

I'm not promoting membership, but it's $93, I think. Might be an investment in some more opportunity for networking. I know, the Company paid for mine. If I were in your position, and a lot younger, I would consider it with that hefty severance package you must have got. Hang tough. :ko: :smokin:

I've been thinking about something Mike S wrote:

We waste space on roadkill recipes and bad jokes so I think there are a few kilobytes available for moral support for one of our own!
You know, I am amazed how companies (and individuals) will waste time on roadkill recipes (things that are nonsense) and exclude things of importance. In many cases, when belt tightening is required they trim muscle instead of fat. “Let’s not do thing smarter or better, let’s just kill a department and save money.”

Of course the two departments to get racked are training and quality. Then they wonder why things continue to get worse!

Good analogy. Indeed, db, this is the case all too often. I once worked with a V.P. of Production who claimed to Sr. Mgt. to be a big supporter of Deming's philosophies (those were his words) but his behavior (his deeds) proved this claim to be nothing more than a very bad joke. When a production peak or belt-tightening time came the first things to go were training and quality improvement initiatives, and they rarely came back when things stabilized again without a big fight. He never saw a policy or procedure (or even customer spec) that he wouldn't "bend" to the point of breaking to ship something. But he was good at punishing/threatening people.

One of the reasons I am somewhat supportive of Juran's call for new research studies and a new "quality manifesto" is because sometimes it seems that if an idea isn't percieved as "new" and doesn't have lots of new and exciting hype surrounding it no one pays much attention. (Look at Six-Sigma -- isn't it mostly repackaged and hyped old stuff passing as new stuff? Look at many products on store shelves that are old products repackaged and sold as new products with much success.) I dount any such quality manifesto would uncover much that is truly "new", but it may help sort-out the best practices among the different ways to do things.

More importantly, though, I think the very fact that it would probably get LOTS of press and discussion and it would have a big name (Juran) associated with it, might cause it to be percieved as "new", radical, innovative, state-of-the-art, whiz-bang, etc. and therefore it might get the attention of more companies and business "leaders" and perhaps colleges/universities. At least this would be my hope. You know, use any trick you can to get the child to take the medicine.

If ISO 9000 as it is today were introduced in 1960 I doubt that today it would be as popular as it is around the world because it would be percieved as "old". Maybe this is the (small) salesman side of me coming out, but if this would work I'd be all for it. Or, maybe I'm all wet, too. :bonk:
