Why has Toyota won Market Share from General Motors?

Re: Why Toyota has won Market Share from General Motors

Back to the OP's question: maybe you want to check the book " The machine that changed the world" because as far as I remember there your question is basically answered for the automotive industry in general.
The study described in the book was I believe from the 90's but the consequences of what was encountered is what the big three still struggle with now and what resulted in TOYOTA becoming what they are now.
A good book, no doubt. But we simply can't overlook the fact that GM has made some pretty tacky cars, even if they'd made them well. And I don't just mean the Pontiac Aztec, either.......

Marc should code the forum in a way that, once you answer a question, that thread should automatically close, to avoid other responders attempts to collaborate. Sorry for barging in, but I was unaware that you are also an expert in the Toyota Production System.
Well ya know what, I'm not, but essentially the original question, as I understood it, is "How come Toyota is beating our socks off?" And I just tossed in my :2cents: trying to put it into a systems approach thing.

But what the "H"....Maybe Toyota has just been a whole lot luckier and has better karma and all the other is just wasted gas from bags like us.

As for collaboration there isn't any that I know of, I just don't reside in the Stratosphere, suffer from hypoxia, and look at myself in a Narcissistic fashion as others do themselves.

:topic:I'm just good old, high-school dop-out, mud eatin' Grunt, street cop, helicopter mechanic Randy, who has learned a bunch from observation and listening to others a whole heap smarter than me.

Sorry to derail your thread there friend, it is a great subject and and interesting one.

Yep! A high school dropout with an MBA and a membership in MENSA - lots of genius types can't spell, though:lmao:
There is a word folks may need to keep in mind when some people begin to rag on about humble roots and status - that word is "dissemble."

I think Randy is specifically playing down his academic achievements because, when all is said and done, he champions the fact the degree is worthless unless the degree holder can back it up by adding value to an enterprise. There are a lot of over-educated drones out there taking up space, but not adding any real value to the organization employing them.

I, for example, have never been employed by Toyota, but I AM aware of many of the ins and outs of the system. Whatever comment I may make about such system (if any) can be held up to the light of reasonableness by readers who then make a judgment call as to the relative worth of my comment. So should it be for ANY comment posted here in the Cove. We have certainly had a number of "highly credentialed" folk come here and post pure blather as well as good, solid, reliable, and verifiable data..

The blessing and curse of an OPEN Forum is they may do so and subsequent readers are free to critique such blather as reasonable or not, also in an OPEN Forum. The prime criterion is that the only the content of the post, not the poster, is open to criticism. Personal attacks are strictly forbidden here in the Cove and should be reported by clicking the report post button and detailing the reason for the report in the popup dialog box which appears.
