Why is OHSAS 18001 not an ISO (IOS) Standard?

Does anybody know the back story for why there is no ISO standard for OHSMS? I have heard that it was proposed years ago as a new work item but the US refused to support it because ANSI Z10 was in the works. Without US support IOS chose to not move it forward. Is that correct?

Hey Randy and for the response!

Good to see you still standing guard at the Cove. In the name of objective journalism are you able to corroborate Weak Licks comments? I see Weak Licks has not posted lots here and his credibility rating is not real high yet. I really appreciate his/her/their contribution and I think it is probably right on mark but the obfuscations of identity diminish my level of comfort on the response.

Weak Licks sounds like they had boots on the ground when TMB was discussing this. The vocabulary of the process is impressive and I am inclined to believe the account of the events leading up to the TMB no votes but I wish I had more in terms of identity to help me believe this account. This is likely my problem as an auditor wanting to verify credibility of information and facts.

I am not suggesting I think Weak Licks is wrong about the back story. I would just like a little verification of the facts presented by Weak Licks. Randy, I know you from past discussions and you have high credibility in my book so any confirmation on the way the TMB voted or Weak Licks account of how this went down would be helpful.

Years ago the ISO working group decided against a H&S standard...There was a lack of strong support because of potential financial and other business problems quoted from some member countries and a percieved lack of real need (at that time)

As I mentioned a number of times, ISO will now consider a Management System Standard a la OHSAS 18001.

Sidney, sorry I can read ILO-OSH, BS OHSAS 18001, ANSI/AIHA Z10, etc... but not "ISO OHS 18001". Today BS OHSAS 18001 is not yet an ISO standard. Despite your assertion there is no ISO information regarding an ISO OSHMS standard creation project. Many years ago I still read many times "ISO OSH 18001" was existing but not.

Wait and see is the good way. Bye.

A NWIP on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - Requirements proposed by BSI (UK) was approved by the ISO member bodies in June 2013. The TMB approved the establishment of a new project committee on Occupational health and safety management systems ? requirements, and allocated the secretariat to BSI (UK), via TMB Resolution 71/2013.

Oh well, c'est la vie.
