I want answer from audience that why Japanese are ahead.
They don't use Six Sigma approach. They dont believe on tools of SPC's.

One thing that i have observed as i have worked with Japanese is that they work as Teams in Problem solutions. They achieve results/objectives successfully
in-spite of using six sigma tools.

However they believe on Lean Management System. Team Members Empowerment and Management Philosophies of how to get things done effectively and efficiently.

Why without using six sigma DMAIC they are leading world ????

From my experience (although it is limited) of working with Japanese companies they do use all these tools they just do not package it as "Six Sigma" of DMAIC or even TS 16949.

Because there is nothing in "Six Sigma" that hasn't been around for a long time and those tools work if used, whether you call them Six Sigma or not.:2cents:

ARE the Japanese ahead? Been reading the news on Toyota lately? Read some of Akio Miura's (Japan's first Certified Manager Quality/Organizational Excellence) posts in ASQ's Ask A Quality Professional Discussion Board on Japanese lean, Kaizen and "Poka-Yoke" practices. I have "poka-yoke" in quotes, because Akio-san says the words are impolite language in Japanese.

They effectively match how they manage & improve quality with the culture of their country/people. Since they are a pretty closed society the culture has a lot less variation, which makes it easier to get people pointed in the same direction. And they take a much longer-term view, rather than focusing on short term financial results.

You can not judge the Japanese industry based on a few unfortunate events at Toyota. In addition, I do not think that Akio Miura speaks for the entire Japanese industry. He's entitled to his opinion. And...so are we.

I read some of his replies in this thread (from back in 2005):

and, personally, I found it very difficult to process viewpoints/opinions when they are transmitted in a totally unprofessional manner.

I know that there is a perception that the Japanese are ahead but by which data is this statement supported?

If they are indeed ahead then from my experience working for Japanese companies (I have only worked for Japanese companies) the largest difference is a pure focus on the product. Japanese systems are typically set up to verify and reverify the product, sub-assemblies, components etc. This is applied in both overseas operations and in Japan (having been there for only one year this statement is narrow). Based on what I have seen from European and North American customers there is less focus on the parts.

For example when a customer rep. from a Japanese company is in they will almost always been in the lab reviewing actual data of actual product, on the line reviewing the actual data of the actual product and at the last 30 mins of the day will ask to show, "how do you control your suppliers?". When a North American customer is in they are typically looking at some audit for our entire operations (QSB or Q1) and will more than likely spend maybe only 10 minutes looking at what they are actually going to be receiving.

There was a joke going around our industry a few years ago talking about if Japanese manufacture wants a baked potato they tell you they want a baked potato, make sure that you bake the potato with as little variation in your pocesses as possible. If a NA manufacture wants a baked potato they will tell you a baked potato is what they want and will spend the next 3 years telling you what type of oven to use, in what type of pan and what the temperature should be, they will also want to know how you are going to validate how you are going to buy the oven, if you actually got the oven and blah blah... there was a lot more to the joke but I think you get the point.

Now, having said all of that. I am not sure that there is an actual difference from a product stand point. I think that there is a perception. That is my opinion only.
