Why to Implement or Not to Implement ISO 26000 (Social Responsibility)

Dear Members,

would like to hear from here what are the reasons not to implement ISO 26000 as compared to the many reasons to implement ISO 26000. As this is not a quality system subjected to accreditation / audits, what difference does it make if a firm is already practising CSR, except for documenting it according to ISO 26000 clauses?

I hope to get assistance here to propose to the management if to proceed with ISO 26000 or to maintain our CSR practices.

Sorry to answer your question with a question but the topic is so wide and with many angles to approach. My question is: what is your objective for proposing such an exercise?

Hi Harry,

reason I am asking here is because we practise CSR, which is very much voluntary and without a proper guidelines as in the ISO 26000. To formalise this, our management is favourable with ISO 26000.

However, apart from the need to documenting the requirements according to the ISO, there may be other factors that contribute to justify using the standard. Hence, I need to measure the additional effort needed to pursue a proper standards, while implementing the same practices as in CSR.

I may not be answering your question, as we all know the main objective to implement such an exercise.

Elynn,

Answer these questions:

1. Are your competitors making a show of being socially responsible?
2. Do your customers making a show of being socially responsible?

Is so it is a no brainer.

3. If not, what are the benefits of leading the way?

Do not dump your CSR in favor of ISO 26000.

Recommend development of your management system to fulfill the most important CSR recommendations from the standard.

You are on the right track, resources are made available to fulfill TM requirements not ISO guidelines.

The least of any responsible organization concern's should be if their program aligns or not with the clauses of a guidance standard.

Why should any organization be interested in the guidance provide in ISO 26000? In my opinion, this is a very easy question to answer: Corporate Responsibility (CR) is a very broad subject. There are many aspects/facets to CR. The principles covered in clause 4 of ISO 26000 include
  • Accountability
  • Transparency
  • Ethical behaviour
  • Respect for stakeholder interests
  • Respect for the rule of law
  • Respect for international
  • norms of behaviour
  • Respect for human rights
So, if you are TRULY committed to being a responsible corporate entity, why not use a model that has been developed and refined by experts from the World over? ISO 26000 represents global consensus on modern CR protocols. Collective wisdom, if you will. Chances are, ISO 26000 encompasses more than what your own organization does, and the beauty is that you can prioritize aspects of your CR effort at will. Proper utilization of ISO 26000 allows for an organization to focus on subsets of CR, if it makes sense to them.

"No" to these 2 questions.

Do not dump your CSR in favor of ISO 26000.
I am looking more at the disadvantage rather than benefits which the latter is written all over the world.

My objective is not to be overloaded by standard practices and maintaining it can be more effort than the benefits reap.

Sidney, I need your advice... does the guidelines require documenting for all clauses as it appears to me that it should start from clause 6.

People from around the world share their thoughts on social responsibility with ISO

Because social responsibility (SR) concerns us all, ISO organized an article writing contest inviting people from around the world to express their views on SR and the new ISO 26000 standard which provides organizations of all types with practical guidance on on the subject.

The winner of the article writing contest is José Rakotomanjaka from Madagascar whose thought-provoking article looks at the challenges that Africa faces in sowing a responsible future (www. iso .org /iso/sr_contest_winner.htm - DEAD 404 LINK UNLINKED). His article is published in the March 2011 issue of ISO’s magazine ISO Focus+ (www .iso. org /iso/iso-focusplus_2011-03.htm - DEAD 404 LINK UNLINKED), whose Special Report is dedicated to ISO 26000.

The response to the contest was outstanding, with a wealth of articles received from people all over the world: from Armenia to Indonesia, from the Philippines to Japan, from experts to non-experts alike. A selection of the entries can be found here ( www .iso.org /iso /sr_contest.htm - DEAD 404 LINK UNLINKED).

The contest was organized through ISO’s social media presence in Facebook (www.facebook.com/isostandards) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/isostandards).

I have got some more information on how to assess ISO26000: Unlike other ISO standards, companies cannot acquire certification in ISO26000 to prove that they have observed its strictures. One way forward, however, is for a company to acquire an independent third party assessment of its practices in order to evaluate its performance with regard to its social responsibilities.
