Will the End of Windows XP Support affect anything in AS9100?

With Microsoft ending support of windows xp in april 2014 would continued use of this past that point be a violation of AS9100 in some manner? Please exemplify what this would be non-conforming to if you could

Windows XP is a software program (regardless of revision).

AS9100 is a specification for a Quality Management System

thus

one should not affect the other nor does one make a reference to another (that would be considered prescriptive).

The only implication I can see, and it is a bit of a stretch, at least for the reasonable foreseeable future, would be in the preservation of records area. When it is no longer supported, there could be a risk, not matter how small, that your electronic records would be easier to compromise.

And again, I view that as a stretch.

I would strongly recommend you using the expiration of Windows XP support to move towards acquiring a new Operating System.

I am not that knowledgeable in AS9100. However, if there is a section requiring validated computers, I would state that the concern you have raised would pull that into question. Part of an Installation Qualification for a computer involves security (from what I've seen).

XP is one of the more common Operating Systems Windows has had. However, from a security perspective, it has a lot of vulnerabilities. Hence the reason why there were so many XP Patches/updates being rolled out all the time.

FWIW... I have a decent laptop at my house I will be disposing. It's just not worth it having a computer with so many vulnerabilities.

However... here is a very good FAQ/ Help link for the impending XP issue. If your hardware system (RAM, disk space/ processor) can handle a Windows 7/ 8 update, it may be easier to execute the update under some level of Change Control, without having to start from scratch.

Here is a link to the same information in the link in Adobe PDF format.

Isolated systems have lower security risks, but you do need to determine the risk for controlled access and accessibility down the road. If you have competent IT staff to support it, great! Would you believe we have isolated inspection equipment still running Windows 3.1... we do. Yes there are contingencies for repair and replacement and upgrades, but it still works for us.

You make some good points here that I failed to mention.:agree1: There are a lot of what-ifs here. If the system is not connected to a network/ internet, and the USB and such are disabled, the security risk is pretty low. I would think that an XP system in that instance would not be an issue.

I don't think the XP thing is a Y2K End of World scenario, but also it does not need to be ignored. A reasonable risk-based approach should help determine what (if any) is the next course of action.
