Willing to share my experience

Well, going from no experience to a quality systems manager in 9 months, and just recently passed the first certification audit for the company I work for, with no non-conformances and only 2 OFI's, I am willing to do my best to help people that are new to ISO to pass certification. I can only thank the people on Elsmar for helping me. If you have a question, please post. Regards

May I know the nature of your company?

I am into a service industry and I want slowly introduce ISO as a QMS (not yet for certification, but purely to manage the quality system). I came from manufacturing and it is not easy to transfer the experience. I would appreciate any help on which direction to take.

Hi Reynald,

I have worked across manufacturing and non-profit organisations in quality roles. I might be able to help, what would you like to know:bigwave:

Dayle,

Well done! What was the most difficult aspect to get across to your colleagues?

Hi Alpine,
Great to know that. First for me to ask probably is the most basic question: Is it right for me to use ISO9001 as a QMS framework for service industry? If yes how then would I approach the following?:
-Control of nonconforming product
-Corrective action
-Preventive action

These maybe silly questions but Im totally new to this environment.

Best Regards

Anyplace in the ISO 9001 standard where the word "product" appears it can be interchanged for "service". Another way of looking at it is that service is a type of product.

Element 7.1, production planning, becomes service planning. Element 7.5.1, control of production becomes control of service.

It may help us if you could tell us the nature of your service.

The nature is that of professional documents services. It can be thought as a group of documents specialists that creates brochures, marketing presentations, and even design posters and logos.

HI, Reynald
I am in a mixed industry that entails mostly manufacturing, but also entails elements of raw parts supply and after sales service

Hi, John
You were one of the many I read consistently while I was lurking and gleaning information. Thank you.
In answer to your question, I had very few difficulties with my colleagues. They were a bit apprehensive at first that I was there to be breathing down their necks, and telling them how to do their jobs. After I explained what my job was and a few months of seeing what I was really all about, I believe they actually think that the Quality Systems Manager is a pretty cool guy.

Hi again,

Firstly as well all know in here, there are no silly questions, only questions we are too afraid to ask. When I was working for the non-profit service organisation, we had ISO 9001 certification so it worked for us. We were also a multi-site organisation spread across a large geographic area. In regards to control of non-conforming product, in your organisation, do you have physical product per se? If you do, I would handle it the way you would in manufacturing. Where I was, there was nothing physical, we provided a service to people. The system was there, to ensure consistency across the organisation. We had determined the best practice for how to carry out the various service functions we provided. ISO 9001, gave the structure and provided some of the discipline in keeping everyone going in the same direction. I hope this helps in some small way
