Work Instruction for Writing a Work Instruction

DrM - In my company the maintenance of any documentation that falls under ISO 9001 auditability is, ultimately, the responsibility of the Quality Dept. We do seem to be the ones who care most about the little details like consistent formatting, checking every cross reference and official definition, etc. Pink and purple balloons just don't cut it for a professional document. :mg:

Obviously the basic steps within a given Procedure or Work Instruction come from the folks directly involved in it - but by "clueless" I refer to people who have never written instructions for anything before and are unlikely to ever write any more in the future, so spending hours coaching and training them on how to write instructions so they can actually be followed and how to format it to company standards would be rather a waste of time.

That applies more to the project mentioned than to our regular folks. We have a few engineers who have become quite adept at writing PR and WI. And I love that. :agree1:
Thank you for clearing things up for me. I am glad to hear that you are getting help with the WI's and wish you lots more (help, that is).:applause:

My question is why do you need a work instruction? And will you need a work instruction on how to write the work instruction on how to write the work instruction on how to write the wor.........

Where does it end?
Sorry for off-topic, but just couldn't resist posting this Dilbert dialogue from 2010 calendar on my wall:

BOSS: Carol, setup a meeting with the Technology Review Board to decide how we'll decide on new technologies.

ASSISTANT: Do you also need a meeting to decide how you will put together a meeting to decide how to decide things?

BOSS: Hmm...

ASSISTANT: Maybe I should get some people together to help you answer that question?

BOSS: Maybe...

In my last company, where I was in charge, I wrote a WI for writing a Procedure and WI. It helped me to get others to write docs instead of having me do it all, provided consistency, listed the approval process, etc. It worked for the company.

The company I came to also had the same type document in use, and I referenced it when it was time for me to write a procedure.

Don't get caught up in silly arguments like "where's the procedure on how to write procedures on how to write procedures". If it works for you ignore the noise and move on.

Hallo!

I know this is an old tread but I am very frustrated and need to vent some of my anger :D...sorry about it.

You know how I got here? By googling "how to write a work instruction". Because I needed ideas on a training material.

I work in a big automotive manufacturing plant as a QMS Engineer. Approximately 80 engineers work here.
I have f. training on the documentation system and minimum form and content requirements of the different document types, templates with instructions. And every day when auditing or when we are required to send out (updated)work/operational instructions to customers/suppliers I have the same issue: very bad instructions, sometimes even completely unusable ones...

Most of our engineers cannot or will not write a work instruction which makes sense e.g they put some bad pics in and 2 half sentences and the assembly line operators need to work from that. The one I saw today I could not even find out what product it was supposed to cover....so how should a guy know from it what to do during work?

So now I am writing a more detailed training material than I already have to what to put in a work instruction, how to make it more readable and usable. It is ridiculous, some of the process engineers cannot even draw a half decent process flow diagram or even list what process steps they have in their process so I am not surprised that they cannot even write an instruction for the workers.

So the opening of this topic is not a nonsense there are places that document is needed.

A work instruction doesn't need to be any more complicated than this, because that's all it is...It's also a pretty good example of a process
True, if your process is making a soft drink or other non-critical product for personal use.

Sometimes the answer is IN the box. Sometimes the example given isn't right for the situation.

Yes, people probably overcomplicate more often than they oversimplify, but either is a problem.

Reunalla reported a problem with unreadable and unusable WIs in an automotive assembly plant. He may need something more illuminating than "put the crossmember on the frame and tighten the bolts to 120 ft-lbs. Don't install it in the wrong spot."
