Mr Brahmaiah,
What you say about the focus of a QMS being manufacturing is a very old-fashioned and now long outdated belief.

It contradicts various facts, and the official ISO position, eg, the definition of product as including services (see ISO 9000 and 9004), the FAQs on the official ISO website
61. How are the standards applicable to organizations that provide services?

The standards are applicable to all types of organizations, operating in all types of sectors, including service providers.

(Note: the definition of the term 'product' in ISO 9000:2005 also includes 'services'. ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 9004:2000 have been written to reflect this definition.)

62. My organization provides services. Is the new ISO 9001:2008 applicable to us?

ISO 9001 is equally appropriate to all sectors, including service providers. The standard is applicable to all types of organizations.[/URL]
Fact (from the official ISO Survey of Certifications – 2008:
Services have signicantly increased their share of certicates, with service providers accounting for 40 % of all ISO 9001 certificates compared to 32 % in 2007.
40% of certificates for 9001 now to service providers and you want to say the focus of a QMS is manufacturing??? So not true.
:confused::lmao::lmao: :lmao: :bonk:

Taking a small segment of my letter and commenting on that is out of context.Well I have said that it is not official.
Not only is it 'not official', it's plain wrong (see above).

Note: it's very common practice in this forum and others to take only parts of a post and comment. I usually don't quote whole posts, as it's clearer to and shorter to use just the parts to discuss or debate. If that were done in a way that misrepresented someone's position or argument, it would be out of order and unprofessional. That is not what I did.

My comments on this subject is mainly due to my belonging to TS16949 stream. In case of TS 16949 it is predominantly focussed on auto parts manufacturing. In any case major chunk of QMS certified organizations are from manufacturing industry. Therefore the focus of QMS standards naturally should be on manufacturing industry..

Here is a version of SOP which I gathered from a Japanese consultant but adopted to my machine.Note there is no one who can match japanese in Quality.
I don't see anything here that many other North American plants don't already have, often with pictures to assist operators. I'd have to disagree with the statement that no-one can match the Japanese in quality. It is well known in the North American market and some European markets that domestic product matches and exceeds standards originally set by the Japanese. The Honda plant in Swindon, England, for example, had higher intra-plant quality ratings than those of Honda's domestic plants.

In my experience only a few Japanese plants do very well. They tend to be managed by Toyota, Honda, Sony etc, and I've been in a number of Japanese owned plants where they have the same problems that the rest of the world have...one I remember made more scrap than good product, due to a simple tooling design issue from their HQ in Japan! It took an English consultant to correct it for them!

I have to disagree. The standards writers have done their very best to remove manufacturing biased wording out of ISO 9001 to make it a generic standard. However, sector-specific (manufacturing) standards such as ISO/TS 16949, AS 9100 and the like obviously include manufacturing related terminology. Let's not confuse the standards and be very clear about what standard is quoted and/or referred to. This will help our (new) Members who may not quite understand the differences and the intended purpose of the various QMS Standards.

Yes, very clear. But you frequently post from that viewpoint in places other than in that forum, and/or hold that the requirements of that Standard apply in many other cases (where they don't) and thus often give wrong or erroneous impressions.
In case of TS 16949 it is predominantly focussed on auto parts manufacturing.
Yup.

OK.
Therefore the focus of QMS standards naturally should be on manufacturing industry..
And there, off track. Nope. Doesn't follow. :nope:
A textbook example of a failure in logical thought.

Not only can you combine them where it makes sense to do so, you can call them whatever you want to call them.

Just like Jim said ... It is YOUR documentation for YOUR use and control. I like to call my procedures WHAT-TODO's and the instructions HOW-TODO's. (just kidding here)

Is there a limitation or minimum on the amount of detail/number of procedures to be created. I work for a medium sized construction company which although has operated successfully for a number of years are only now trying to push for ISO registration. No documented manual is in place nor can I see evidence on any documented standard operating procedures.

I don't want to, as an old saying here goes ' teach my granny to suck eggs' but feel we need to formalise the major procedures. Those I have identified thus far are :

1. How we deal with tender enquiries. (paperwork/recording issue?)
2. Document/drawing issue to suppliers/site
3. Request for Information/Technical Queries.
4. Drawing changes/contract variations.

Should all these simply come under 'Document Control'.

5. Obtaining quotes/placing orders
6. Selecting suppliers/subcontractors

Do I need to document a procedure as to how all site operations occur or could this be covered simply by method/execution statements?.

The above query may seem silly but on looking through this thread at some examples I think some of the example procedures seem overly complicated and onerous.
