I hope you mean $1500 for 13 years total. Or are you including all certifications?
My dues for the upcoming year will be about $150, including my Section and Division memberships (no current certs - all expired, no plans to renew any.)

...
yeah...13 years, at a range of about $85 up to 135 per year.

How does ASQ membership "support the industry"?
Every industry has one or more trade groups promoting that industry. Some better than others. But, ASQ does do many good things, conferences, speakers, training, certifications. They do good things, but some just think they could do more.

As I suggested, we need to discuss making it better, not getting rid of it.

Friends,

It's that time of the year again; an invitation to renew my ASQ membership....
Need to do some serious thinking...

I don't think anyone in this thread has suggested getting rid of it. Some of people (like me) think the best way to get it improved is to stop supporting it. It's like dealing with an addict. An alcoholic will never stop drinking if people keep patting him on the back, reassuring him and buying him beer.

I just paid mine, for the 13th year in a row. That's $1500 out of pocket. But, it is worth it because:

1. to support our industry association,
2. to meet people in our industry,
3. to improve out industry,
4. some standards, like TS, now have a continuing education requirement.

I don't get a lot of direct tangible benefit out of my membership, but it is good to support the industry.

I think this discussion ought to focus on how we can IMPROVE ASQ, not whether we need it...
I'm not suggesting we do not need it, I'm thinking of whether or not I need it.

Again, if I can not make the meetings or conferences due to audting all the time, how does that contribute to continuing education or meet people in our industry?

I'm getting more out of The Cove that ASQ.

Can I use that as my sig?

I have been an ASQ member since 1976 and a senior since 1988. I also have been certified as a CQE.

Through the time, I have not overly enthused about Milwaukee (ASQ headquarters) though. I was recommended by the Kitchener, Ontario section for a fellowship in ASQ a few years ago but Milwaukee shot it down. I did spend a lot of time with my application with assistance from local ASQ members and was never give an official reason for my application rejection.

I spent a lot of time on an article on GD&T and submitted in to Milwaukee to have it turned down. My official reply was that they had seen better ones.

I had to send Milwaukee a notice that I didn't like the e-mail spam that i was receiving twice a week and now I do not even get the local Kitchener section information. I wanted to retain my local notices.

I recently retired my ASQ membership and I found out that they automatically eliminate one's CQE designation unless one applies to have it retire with you. Go figure that one.

I have met a lot of fine people in ASQ in the local chapter and still go to the odd meeting but would I recommend membership? I probably still would only to get one certified in one area or another. I always looks impressive on a resume.

As far as gaining knowledge in quality, this web site is the best source that I have found so far. Please do not join ASQ if you think that you will gain more knowledge in the quality field. It just doesn't happen.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing ASQ. I'm only stating that, at this time (past 3 years) I'm not in the least benefiting from my membership. My fault? Partially because I do not have time to make the meetings due to traveling for audit. Partially because the meetings are only held in one area of Atlanta, which precludes my attendance even if I'm in town. And therein lies my reason for considering not renewing.
