So many veterans in cove, so I wanna ask a question and desire your comments.
My question is : A quality system(iso9001) engineer need technical background and know workmanship deeply? I worked in china, you know, anything branded "chinese characteristic",include iso9001. I want to know the status of iso9001 implementation in USA,in UK or other countries. Can I get a job description for QS engineer ?
I worked in a textile corp.as a quality system engineer about three years after graduated . Recently,I joined a toothpaste corp as QS engineer. My boss ask me to solve some problems in the assembly line, but I think I`m a system engineer only, this tasks are not involved in my responsibilities. I have no confidence to solve this problem because I know my shortcoming is lacking of technical background. :(

Re: You are a qualified system engineer?

Hello, there!

So you are doing some level of quality-type work in China. You gave a brief background on your experience. Are you asking about coming to USA/Canada/UK etc. to perform quality engineering work? Or are you trying to get a comparison to what you are doing there to what is going on here in like the USA?

If you are trying to find out about quality engineering, ASQ might be a good start. Go to WWW.ASQ.ORG and search for the Certified Quality Engineer. There will be qualifications given and a list of the different areas that Certified Quality Engineers are required to study. Please do not consider that every quality engineer are doing the identical things, and that organizations all require the certification. It is just a pretty good summary of generally what quality engineers are involved with on a day-to-day basis.

ISO is the same guideline globally. If there is a specific issue you are interested in, perform a search at this website and read some of the previous threads. Quality and ISO are such big areas; I'm not sure what you are looking for.

Bottom line, whatever function you are performing now, there are others performing similar work all over the world, no matter what title, certification, etc. they may have. Too, they may be facing some of the same challenges/obstacles that you face.

Please feel free to re-post if this is not what you were requesting.

Brad

Million tks for your kind attention and reply.

as you say,"Or are you trying to get a comparison to what you are doing there to what is going on here in like the USA?" ,YES, above is my real aim. ISO9001 is exotic for Chinese, the theory come into China later than other countries, such as USA ,UK etc. Maybe you don`t know, ISO9001 in china is very hard . Certificate marketing is disordered. So many company doesn`t implement iso9001,but they can get iso9001 certificate. Why? They buy it with MONEY. Is this occur in USA or other countries?
I have no chance to see other countries` status, but I want to know as a Quality system engineer. I hope that the folks in cove can let me know.

Seond, the quality system engineer will focus on SYSTEM ,NOT specific problems in assembly line. Is it right?

Yes, I hate to admit that, but there are a few Registrars that can be bought.

That really depends on what is defined as a Quality Systems Engineer. This could be defined as someone with the responsibility of complete Aerospace Systems (Electrical, Mechanical or Hydraulic), or could be defined as someone that is responsible for the overall Quality Management Systems. That really depends on the definition of the specific organization.

This is true. The specific organization's definition of job responsibilities could be based on the quality system's maturity.

A system that places a good deal of attention on inspection and an engineer's intervention on the line may be doing so because the line workers are not educated or advanced enough in QC to find or solve the problems at their source. The engineer, who possesses these qualities, is seen as the solution. I have seen this in software companies also, where a quality engineer is actually more like an inspector/tester. The quality engineer is expected to provide solutions in code or scripts, or at least identify the flaw's source for software engineers.

On the opposite side of the scale, a mature system will educate its workers to solve problems and record the learnings at all levels. The systems engineer largely serves the role of monitor/coach/facilitator. In these systems it's possible to succeed if one's background was in a different industry, but one should still learn the new business and methods to be effective.

Often it's not clear which of these scenarios, or something between them, will be the reality until one gets deep enough into the job and learns the truth that perhaps was not included in the job description. Then one makes the decision to stay or seek different employment.

It depends on the company. Each has its own expectations. Some want an engineer who works on quality issues on the plant floor, while others want systems people for whom an actual engineering background might be a secondary consideration (or not considered at all). The key is to understand what a potential employer is looking for before accepting a job, because there are no universally accepted definitions.

Re: You are a qualified system engineer?

Now you know better than that Jim. I can't specifically deface a particular Registrar. Most everyone knows of the few.
Well, by not "defacing" one, you're implicating all. You need to be careful about casual "defacing," unless you're willing to substantiate your claims.

There are a few. Which does not imply all Registrars. (eg: _J_)
