NOTE on the 14000 series: The table of ISO 14000 standards is general and does not contain all ISO 14000 standards such as ISO 14024, Environmental Labels and Declarations -- Practitioner Programs. In addition, all of the above standards have not been finalized and published yet and most of them are still under the development process (May, 1996). The standards can be in various stages of a standardization process: New Proposal, Working Draft, Committee Draft, Draft International Standard and "finalized" International Standard.

The ISO 14001 standard is the key standard for an organization to implement its environmental practices, while other ISO 14000 standards can support this development and implementation by providing tools, methods, techniques and guidelines for management system auditing, environmental performance evaluations, life cycle analysis, environmental aspects for product specifications and standards, environmental labeling and many others. The Definition Standard of environmental terms is an important tool for understanding and interpreting the ISO 14000 series, while the ISO 14004 standard, General Guidelines on environmental principles, systems and supporting techniques, provide specific guidance and helpful hints for design and development of ISO 14001 EMSs.
