I have a few people who are complaining that job descriptions are not posted or made available to the employees. Although it is easy enough to go up to HR to look at them, HR does not seem to want to post them. Does anybody know if there is any requirement to make the job descriptions available as with work instructions?

if the intent of the job description is for hiring etc, don't include them as part of the training/instruction package....just keep it as a prerequisite....then no one needs to see them (ie post).

if the intent is for identifying the training need, only the supervisor determining the need ..needs immediate access.

if the intent is for the member to use it to understand his function/responsibilities/authority...or used as the training tool, if you will, then thats another story.

Most companies do not post job descriptions...it causes discention among the ranks and "not my job syndrome"

Thanks Barb,
I think it's your third "if". They seem to want to clarify their responsibilities and certainly the lines of authority. This is a Japanese company and those lines are extremely fuzzy. Management does not want to limit its ability to assign work as they see fit. Actually I think they are scared of the "lines of demarcation" syndrome.

I wonder if the company should make a policy of showing the job descriptions to those that request them rather than posting them for all to see. We'll have to discuss at the next meeting.

I don't think I have ever seen a job description that doesn't have a disclaimer statement...as in .... "And anything else you may be asked to do...."...LOL

Yes...having them available for review is better than posting in most cases
