This is embarrassing, but I have been asked to do a Process FMEA for a floating plastic bath time toy (or a duck). Could anyone please offer any help, suggestions, FMEAs they have lying around related to ducks etc. This is not a prank, but it is a University exercise. HELP!!! Kate Thomas IP: Logged |

Check out the FTP files here - there are a number of Fmea examples - treat it just like any other process.. draw out the steps starting from raw materials stage. assign criticalities... etc. [This message has been edited by Jim Biz (edited 31 August 2000).] IP: Logged |

Kate, A Process FMEA is usually performed on a manufacturing/assembly process. The fact that the end product is a rubber duck is unimportant. You should start by flowcharting the manufacturing process. The FMEA then should be performed keeping in mind the characteristics the end product needs to perform properly for the customer (customer = child and parent, characteristics = child's and parent's expectations of toy). There are two publications that may be helpful. 'Failure Mode and Effects Analysis' by D. H. Stamatis, ISBN 0-87389-300-X, and The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) FMEA Referrence Manual. Contact AIAG through their website http://www.aiag.org/ or telephone 810-358-3003 Good luck! IP: Logged |

To both who have replied (so far) Thanks A silly question how do I get to the FTP files? I am using Internet Explorer 5, this is not what I should be using, I guess!! I'm having one of those lifetimes Kate (dazed and confused) [This message has been edited by k.t (edited 31 August 2000).] [This message has been edited by k.t (edited 31 August 2000).] IP: Logged |

Hi Kate, If you scroll to the bottom of the topic page, you will find a link to the Cayman home page. Click on the link, and once on the home page you'll find another link to the FTP files. Here you'll find a sub-folder containing FMEA info. IE5 should be fine, you may need Adobe Acrobat to read some of the files. Hope this clears a little bit of your confusion :-) IP: Logged |

Thanks Its very early in the morning here and I am sorry to say that the old grey matter just isn't there at this time. Just after posting that reply I actually visited the home page.... I'd never been there before!!!! Just to completely put the cat amongst the pigeons etc... I asked the lecturer to clarify some of the issues concerning the FMEA. If this makes any sense to anyone, which I doubt, he wants a lifetime (of the product) DESIGN FMEA. This throws even more mud into an already muddy area so I say again....
