-Defining strategy
-Benchmarking competitors
-contact with customers, understanding demands such as delivery, packaging etc.
-Contribute to team effort.
There are probably more but this shows the sort of contribution that they can give.

There is of course the APQP handbook.
I haven't any books but maybe someone else can recommend something.

Take a read through the APQP slides here /APQP/ As I remember there are a few ideas on how marketing fits in.

Howard's list is good info and food for thought.
