This question may seem a bit lame, but does anyone know exactly what ever happened to MIL-STD-45662A, and the old way of auditing cal labs, like MIL-HANDBOOK-52? I know the U.S. military was attempting to get rid of $ 1,000 toilet seats by going to commercial standards, but once in a while someone still asks about the old military standards.

Are they still in use? Has there been some "official" U.S. military directive to bury them?

One last quickie to all of the cal lab folks out there in Gogates land: What do your customers ask for and recognize more: the ISO 10012, the ISO 25, the new soon-to-be ISO 17025, or the NCSL/ANSI standard of Z540-2-1997 or Z540-1-1994? Perhaps there are even more "standards" that the paper-world QA folks are looking for?

CALIBRATION SYSTEMS REQUIREMENTS

MIL-STD-45662A, dated 1 August 1988, is hereby canceled. Future acquisitions should refer to International Organization for Standards (ISO) 10012-1, "Quality Assurance Requirements for Measuring Equipment," Part 1: "Meteorological Confirmation System for Measuring Equipment;" American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/National Conference of Standards Laboratories (NCSL) Z540-1, "General Requirements for Calibration Laboratories and Measuring and Test Equipment;" or comparable standards as alternatives to MIL-STD-45662A.

As far as the standards you inquired about we still see requirements for 45662A but more often see ISO GUIDE 25, 10012-1 & Z540-1-1994. Some are just looking for ISO 9000 registration. It's a real grab bag with our customers. I have seen one so far one requirement for 17025 but that organization was jumping the gun somewhat.

Z540-2-1997 is the U.S. Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty.
