somashekar,

Many companies overlook the beneficial environmental impacts of their processes, products and services.

Just about any company that improves the efficiency of plant and equipment has a significant environmental impact that is beneficial.

One "real industry" example is the Nooter Construction.

We are a consultancy who helps organisations extend the life and safety of client assets so less finite resources are used to maintain and repair the clients assests. Client assets will last longer so they will not need to be scrapped and rebuilt as often.

We sort our domestic rubbish in our kitchens and office which facilitates re use and or cycling of the base materials.

We are an electronic business so we use very little paper.

We do not put our fax number on stationary or business cards which results in the reduction of paper entering the business

Dear Somashekar

Please consider these:

Activity: Product Design for Energy efficient products (say Eco-design)
Aspect: Less GHG emission during the life (use) of the product
Impact: Lower air pollution due to GHG

Activity: Process improvement leading to the replacement of a toxic substance with a non-toxic substance
Aspect: Elimination of discharges and emissions of the toxic substance
Impact: Lower air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution due to the toxic substance

In both the above examples, significance can be attributed from (a) legal requirements (b) short and long term health effects, (c) potential liability to the organization

In general, as the organization addresses the significant impacts through various means (e.g. Objectives, targets and programmes), the same aspect may turn out to be a positive environmental aspect once properly addressed. Here "positive" means "less" impact than the baseline impact.

Ramakrishnan
