Interpretation of Decimal Readings

I hope this is not a stupid question, but most of my parts need to be measured to the tenths (0.0001"), so the measuring system should measure down to .00001". How do you pronounce that????

I know

.100" = one hundred thousands
.010" = ten thousands
.001" = thousands
.0001" tenths
.00001" = ?????????????????

Again, sorry for the stupid question, but when I search online I get the math terminology.

Thanks

Re: Decimal Reading

I would refer to it as 10 microinches.....but that is the calibration term.....the term you seek I am not too sure about.....

When I was an apprentice machinist, I learned to pronounce the values as follows:

.0001" = one tenthousandth of an inch..... (or "a tenth of a thou")

.00001" = one hundredthousandth of an inch.... (or "a hundredth of a thou")

Does this make sense?

During training; after pronouncing this a few times in English (my 2nd language) I needed a beer....:)

Well, just so you won't feel bad, when I took my first QA job and learned the values (same way) I thought I needed a beer, and my first language is English...so's my 2nd!:lmao:

I have never seen nor heard of the terms you're using the way you're using them..........

0.1= tenth
0.01 = hundreth
0.001 = thousandth
0.0001 = ten thousandth
0.00001 = hundred thousandth
0.000001 = millionth

and so on......................

As you say

"one hundred thousands" that is commonly understood to be 100,000.0

ten thousands = 10,000.0

thousands = 1,000.0

I personally wish we (America) used the metric system like most everyone else. ;)

You do! The USA has been a Metric country since 1866..

From the USMA web site:

The Metric Act of 1866, enacted July 28, 1866, legally recognized the metric system of measurement in the US. It's sometimes referred to as the Kasson Act, after Congressman John A. Kasson of Iowa, who chaired the House Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures.

I prefer saying .00001" as "Point zero zero zero zero one" to avoid any miscommunications ;)

Ajit,

I was never able to remember all the zero's...:(
After the third or fourth zero, I was lost.
