Visual Inspection with No Visual Reference

Our Operators perform a visual inspection where they place the material in their hand and compact it into a ball. Similar to checking the consistency of dough in baking. The Operator is provided with a detailed text description of this qualitative characteristic, but no visual reference is available. Does ISO 9001 actually require a visual reference? Thank you.

The short answer is no.

I'd be interested to learn how you know if the method is effective. Have you tried an R&R study to see if it's a suitable method for the process?

In my experience, that type of test is one of the best around...but the hardest to really capture in a system.

An experienced operator (not "trained", not "taught"..."experienced") can tell you the world from one squeeze.
I'll be interested in your ideas for capturing it...I've never been able to adequately do so.

Trying to actually capture "it looks right" is one of the most frustrating parts of process control to me.
"It looks right" from an experienced operator can usually trump 5 days of data collection.
The new person...well...that's why the experienced folks are so valuable.
