IATF 16949 Cl. 7.1.5.1.1 - Statistical studies shall be conducted

Mrs Tucker

REQUIREMENT: 7.1.5.1.1 Statistical studies shall be conducted to analyse the variation present in the results of each type of inspection, measurement, and test equipment system identified in the control plan.

QUESTION:
We perform GR&R studies by equipment type/family.
We have 3 Brinell Hardness machines that are the same.
As a result, we did a GR&R study on one of them to represent that family of equipment.
Our IATF auditor said we cannot do families for gauges used in inspections listed on the control plan.

I am not finding anything in the MSA is this true?

Apparently your auditor didn't read the word "type" in the requirements. If they are still there, point the word out. If they are already gone, appeal.

The only way you should have to do each one based on the wording of the standard is if there are differences between the machines that would affect their measurement results.

If your customer happens to be Ford, their Customer Specifics for IATF 16949 require STA approval for Gauge R&R performed by "gauge family".

GM and FCA do not have this requirement, not sure about other customers.

As already mentioned, IATF does not disallow this.

Not being allowed to use gauge families would grind everyone's operation to a halt.

This is the kind of stuff that just irritates the heck out of me -- they are supposed to be "trained." Yet, these simple things one says one thing and another says something 180 deg. opposite.
