Opinion: Online Lead Auditor Training?

I would like to hear your opinions on online lead auditor training. My employer is trying to be frugal... doesn't want to spend the $1500 on sending me to a 5 day training course. I'm just concerned that I wouldn't get the education or training from an online course that I could possibly get with the 5 day seminar. What do you think??

Hi KWalls! Good question....

The biggest beneift I see from a 5-day LA training course is the interaction and group assignments. By participating on a mock audit team, you get the feel for what you can expect in an actual audit setting. I think this would be rather difficult to experience in an online setting. And of course, the opportunity to interface with the instructors and ask questions of them and the other attendees.

Last year, 3 of us attended a 5-day LA course and the class was full, which made for an interesting week of activities. :D It was a tough week with long hours, but well worth the $$ our company spent, IMHO. :agree1:

I hope your company decides to allow you to go to the 5-day course - you'll likely get more from it than an online course. That's just my :2cents:. Good luck! :cfingers:

Re: Opinion: Lead auditor online training?

It depends. Are you taking a lead auditor course because you will be a lead auditor, or is this course to be taken to strengthen your position as the MR? There are many variables that need to be looked at. True, your employer may be trying to save some $, but is s/he frugal or stingy? Is there are need to get certificated lead auditor training? Would two or three days of auditor training do? Is there some sort of compromise you can both agree to? I think that the 5 day lead auditor training class is fine if what you want to do is become an auditor working for a CB.

I think it is nice if you want to, and your company can afford the extra training. I do not think that it is a necessary requirement, and sometimes I feel that it has become one of those accepted myths. It is not a requirement, it could definitely be a help to you. Now you, and your employer, need to balance the scales of necessities vs. gain for the company vs. cost to the company. IMHO

Re: Opinion: Lead auditor online training?

Well I did both couple of years. A $300 on line course, and a RABQSA certified course. You get what you pay for.

As a beginner , the $300 course helped me a lot in setting up our AS9100 system, but wasn't enough for my internal auditor role.

It all deprnds of what you want to get out of it.

Good luck

Re: Opinion: Lead auditor online training?

I have been converting most of my training sessions to ONLINE but I don't think a Internal Auditing ONLINE will work out. GD&T is easy and even SPC but the problem with online Internal Audit training is the lack of interaction in mock up situations. I don't know how to do that one.

I would suggest that you spend the $$ and take the public seminar off site.

KWalls - you always ask interesting questions!

As a long time instructor of the LA auditor courses, I can tell you that you'd be missing out on a lot. Gidget has already spoken of the interaction, but (I know she'd say this too) there's way more to it than the learning experience. $1500 isn't bad for and (accredited) RABQSA LA course. You will get to see other people in the role of auditor, get to discuss far more than simply the audit process, hear much more than just what the instructor brings, since many attendess have already 'been there, done that', so you'll get different perspectives and have some validation too. You can have your specific industry's 'spin' put on answers to your questions too - which isn't going to happen on line (even if there were an accredited class available).

And, of course, if you choose the right location, you get some kind of vacation in a nice place. Sure you'll work hard during the day/some evenings, but normally there's time for the group to go visit a nice resturant, see a show etc.

You have a standing invitation to one of our courses, if your boss ponies up the money.........

Re: Opinion: Lead auditor online training?

Thanks you guys! I appreciate all of your responses! Here are a few answers to some of your questions:

1. I was trying to be nice in saying my boss was being "frugal". She just doesn't want to shell out the money for me to go to the course AND my pay (...and my pay isn't anything spectacular for what I do, believe me!!!) :lmao:

2. She also should probably take it (our auditor suggested this). Reason for this is if just by chance I lose my job or quit, she can carry on. She's not too enthused about it. :nope:

3. To Gidget, Randy, Steel, David, JHagani, Randy and Andy... I figured that for a first timer that it probably wasn't wise to take an online course because of the loss of interaction with the mock-ups.

4. I will check out the link that you gave, Randy. I appreciate that. :agree1:

5. Andy... no nice vacation place for me... everywhere in SoCal is within driving distance for me. I live in the middle of everything - 40 minutes to L.A., 1 hour to San Diego, 30 minutes to Long Beach, and of course my personal favorite... 3 hours to Las Vegas/Lake Havasu/Colorado River. So I would be coming home every night. BUMMER!

I will let her know what you all have told me. She knows about the Cove and all of you that are so willing to help. :)

Thanks again, guys!!
