Advantages of Training Employees about Health and Safety at the Workplace

I need to write a report about health and safety in the workplace, I would like to know some advantages of training employees, and some disadvantage. I know that some times it is so expensive the training, because upper management is not interested at all to spend money in their employees, any ideas or suggestion are welcome. Thanks

While it is true that many companies don't want to spend a lot on employees, most, if their product has an complexity at all (Show me a simple process), realize that they must do some sort of training. The pressures for training in the workplace are much different from those in a school. In a school, teachers are expected to work with students, even to the point of developing individual educational programs. In the workplace, the tendency is, rather, to build a training that gets the maximum amount of information to the maximum number of people in the minimum amount of time, with the minimum amount of resources.

There are many advantages because we are talking and concerned about human health and safety at workplace. Value for people and life ...
I do not know your industry, but training is never expensive.
Think on this line ~~~
You may be using several consumables, chemicals, and other materials in your daily tasks. All of these have material safety data sheets (MSDS) that details various levels of effects to human on skin contact, eye contact, ingestion, accidental or intentional in nature. Its fire rating and extinguishing methods and suggested disposal methods.
Take some time to pick such MSDS and select those aspects that are faced in your work place, and explain to the people who handle them the types of effects and suggested remidial measures that has to be taken. Also ensure that suggested simple remidies are kept and maintained in case of emergency, and suggested personal protective equipments provided and used.
Awareness, Alertness and Preparedness goes a long way in better employee health and safety at work place.
These will not be expensive. If you assess them to be expensive, and not done., then you are perhaps not covered within your statutory requirements, which is an other topic altogether.

Thanks for your reply, I know the MSDS explains all the chemicals involve in the material at workplace, I also know how important is to have training about healthy and safety at the workplace, my issue here is to find disadvantages to apply health and safety in a corporation to provide safety/healthy at the workplace. My report has to show the positive sides and the disadvantage of health and safety at the work place. Which I found hard to find. Thanks again to take the time to reply to my post.

Thanks for your reply, actually this report is an assignment for my BBA, I just having issues to find the disadvantage to apply Health and safety at the workplace, I know that it is very important that all the employees be aware of the health/safety at the workplace, I just need to mention also the disadvantage companies have to apply it.

About disadvantages concerning MSDS training, if the trainings are not done with care and to the reality, the hazard / risks may sound overblown and people begin to hesitate working suddenly. The MSDS must never be given to working level people to make their own judgement, rather excerpts from the MSDS must be taken and said in the way the employees are faced with things. Emphesis for proper identification and seperation etc itself goes a long way in preventing incidents that effect health and safety.
As an example, you may read the current thread about Air embolism to realize the disadvantage if not made aware.

I think that it could be improper to talk about advantage and disadvantage.
Awareness , information and training about health and safety is a cogent requirement , mentioned in the applicable law of the country.
However , you could think about to use your internal expert as trainers or to think about facilitation to have funds to do this kind of trainings. In some countries there is regulation for this kind of project.

Management is often short sighted. Training does not have to be expensive. Lots of info is available on line from many reputable organizations.

Healthy employees are more productive.

Employees have better moral if the company cares about their safety and shows it (safety bingo, safety incentives for example).

It saves money in the end (lost time, workman's comp, law suits, bad press).

Aside from Health & Safety in the Workplace being a legal obligation the advantages so outweigh the disadvantages that it would be hard to justify not providing training. All new starts here undergo Health & Safety training as part of their induction programme and are then provided with detailed specific training depending on their job function.

Playing Devils Advocate, if I had to find disadvantages for the company it would be the cost (I'm sure we'd save enough to cover the prosecution costs), the danger of empowering employees by telling them their rights (next they'll be demanding a day off every week) and taking up 2GB of space on my hard drive (I could get another shoot-em-up game on there).

Maintainace updated

Stats from injured employees without being declared,...

My report has to show the benefits of the Health, safety and wellness for the company
and the cons, or disadvantages.
