Develop a Document Control System - Six Sigma Project

This would seem like a very striaght forward project to do, but my raod block is the requirement in our facility that all SS projects have an MSA. I am simply putting together a doc. control system as per the requirements of ISO 9001:2000. Is there a black belt out there that might be able to give me an idea of how to structure an MSA for a project like this? I am very familiar with how to perofm MSA's in general when there are numbers, counts or dimensions involved, but this project has me confused as to what exactly I should be doing an MSA on. Essentially this is just a simple improvement project. Help!!

Hello puddycat,

I am not a SSBB.

However, if you do a SS project on a document control system, I do not see the reason for conducting an MSA. (Assuming that you are talking about a measurement system analysis....). You're not going to use any specific inspection and testing devices on this one are you?

Hope this clarifies.

I agree with you. Unfortunately this is not a discussion that I am willing to undertake with the corporate guru's. I have made my statement to them regarding the logic of when to perform an MSA. I received no reply back......you know what that usually means. I need to figure something out for this project even though there are no real measureable metrics.

Hello puddycat,

As a committed and dedicated Quality Professional you should engage in a discussion with your Corporate Guru's. Speak up when you're asked to do something that does not make sense. Disasters (no, not this particular one) have happened because no one dared to speak up. In this project there should be valid metrics, but I doubt the connection with MSA.

P.S. BTW, I learned that sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness then permission. Make noise when necessary. :agree1:

I agree 100%.

But be sure you're diplomatic about it.

I am also starting a document control function at a startup company. I'm trying to develop a document numbering scheme that will carry us through as we grow. I have previous used alpha prefixes that are semi intelligent with sequential numbers and then rev numbers. Example: QAF-000-00 (QA form) QAP-000-00 (QA procedure). Can anyone share with me what works and what doesn't work?

I would need prefixes for different departments, but then there might be classifications of other types of docs you want to keep separate.

Hi carmelwish

here's a fairly recent thread with several suggestions:

If you search the forums for "document numbering" you'll find a ton of suggestions.

Not quite sure why my thread was moved here, but my original question still remains about the MSA. I already know how to setup a Doc. system, but I need a Black Belt to give me some constructive suggestions on how to meet my project requirements.

Hi puddycat,

Not all of us are SSBB's, but many of us are well-qualified and dedicated quality professionals, and I believe that you have been given excellent responses to your question. Don't you think so? What is it that we overlooked or did not respond to?

I cannot think of any relationship between implementing a doc control system and an MSA.

Implementing a doc control system is a process, and doing an MSA study validates the robustness of a gage measuring system.

The requirement makes no sense to me. Someone does not understand something...?
