Hi Ron,

Can you give some specifics? What kind of program are you referring to, and what sort of difficulties are you having?

Re: Program start-up

Hi Jennifer, We have new programs coming in from Sales for making crates, pallets and so on. I created a form with asking the Sales for specific information so I could then communicate this throughout the departments for all to ensure all departments were informed and to meet with key people to ensure the plan was executed until it hits the production floor into arriving at the customer location. It seems to be falling apart right from the get go. Any suggestions?

Oh, that is helpful. Thank you!

When you say it falls apart right from the beginning, do you mean some sales people fail to obtain the details while others do all right?

Truly, it is difficult to imagine making crates without knowing what size they are to be! Douglas Box seems to think so. And Stepac shows us it's not so easy looking as one might assume.

Has upper management impressed upon people how important it is to get this right? What happens when it doesn't go well?

What method do you use? I found some software such as Crate Pro - maybe something easy for your customers to fill out on a web site interface?

How long has your company been making these items? Are you suffering from large losses from errors?

The Sales people are filling the form out. It then falls apart from there. What I would like to get is a better process of bringing this together. I do not think this form is good enough. The process is not fulfilled. Maybe it needs phases of the program. Thoughts?

Without even having seen it, I can tell you that the form isn't the problem. It's the discipline of following a structured product rollout process. You might want to have a look at the AIAG APQP Manual. It's a good resource for the sort of issues you're facing.

Thanks, Jim. Would you have a sample of a small program used with the APQP structure?

Any ready-to-show APQP package I could give you runs the risk of being a poor fit for your group and its needs.

Can you please instead describe the process you are now using, and exactly what occurs, in what place in the process and by which group, to make it "fall apart." I want to understand if this is an issue of data transfer into drawings, or failure to create a Bill Of Material at all so yoiu can forecast your material needs, of some people "play nice" and others don't... what exactly is going wrong?
