A Question about Continual improvement process in AS9100

Greetings,

Recently at a job interview,i've been asked how i was planning to improve their system by using AS9100 standard if i'm hired.I thought the question was too broad and asked to interviewer to elaborate,but she didnt give me any more details and now she expects a presentation about this.Am i missing a point here or anyone have an idea what she is talking about.(I only worked on IATF 16949 Standard before).

The standard (AS9100D) itself should give you some insight on how to answer that question.

"10.3 . . . The organization shall consider the results of analysis and evaluation, and the outputs from management review, to determine if there are needs or opportunities that shall be addressed as part of continual improvement . . . "

AS9100C may have been a little more helpful as it listed more of the tools contained in the standard.

"8.5.1 The organization shall continually improve the effectiveness of the quality management system through the use of the quality policy, quality objectives, audit results, analysis of data, corrective and preventive actions, and management review."

The only one not applicable to AS9100D is preventive action, but you could easily replace it with risk based thinking.

Both standards continued with the aerospace enhancement:

"The organization shall monitor the implementation of improvement activities and evaluate the effectiveness of the results"

The note provides additional examples continual improvement examples:

"Examples of continual improvement opportunities can include lessons learned, problem resolutions, and the benchmarking of best practices."

What stands out to me is that this is an organizational joint effort. It is not something that one person can do alone. All that one person can really do is encourage a team effort to accomplish this. If they expect one person to do this by themselves they are living in the past when it was a common fallacy that one person, the quality manager, was souley responsibility for the performance of the quality management system. Point that out and then show how you can encourage that team effort.

So its same with IATF.I basically explained this in the interview

but they were somewhat dissatissfied.So i thought that there must be additional clauses in AS9100. Thanks for your reply.

Hit the 7 management principles.

I might say something like:

"I will engage people to make sure we all are customer focused, and are looking for opportunities for improvement.

I will ensure we are effectively using the process approach and review our metrics for how effectively our evidence-based decision making drives our improvement activities.

I will ensure we have effective methods for relationship management with our relevant interested parties."

I would not say "I will do a gigantic internal audit to find out the real experts and the real process flow of the organization, and find out where the bodies are buried first thing I do!"
