the paperless office ... another pipe dream

Marc,

Wow! That is a l o n g list! I had to put together a list of ISO 9000 related standards for The Metrology Handbook but someone else was doing environmental in another chapter ... so I never saw them all together like that.

On the other hand -- since that is a list from the Defense Logistics Agency and is therefore probably a list of every standard ever adopted by DOD, and since we all know that military standards never go away once adopted (remember railroads & Roman chariots?), a practical user can probably pare it down somewhat. For example:
  • ISO 9000-3:1997 has (just in the last couple of weeks) been canceled and replaced by ISO/IEC 90003:2004.
  • ISO 9001:1994, 9002:1994 and 9003:1994 have (as we all know) been canceled and replaced by ISO 9001:2000.
  • ISO 10012-1:1992 and ISO 10012-2:1997 have been canceled and replaced by ISO 10012:2003.
  • ISO/DIS 10012 is now ISO 10012:2003 (see above).
And that's just the ones I can identify by quickly skimming.

A source I usually go to to check on either the 9000 or 14000 series is the lists of active standards posted on the ISO web site.

By the way, if I need to purchase a standard I check these: ASQ, ANSI, NSSN and then other sources as available. I use those sources to minimize currency, format and language problems. I have had to purchase a couple of standards directly from ISO and it was convenient because American Express converts the currency, but they are formatted for A4 paper - used everywhere except the USA - and in both English and French. (The English is the British variety which is not a problem for me :D but may be for many native-born Americans.) On the other hand, ISO has recently started doing something cool with their electronic copies: when you purchase and download a standard, each page is watermarked with the purchaser's name, the transaction number and date, and the number of copies licensed. I just looked that up in Adobe Acrobat, and that appears to be something that can be done by setting it in the Distiller options -- I will have to check that out some more. Lots of document control things could be done with that ...
