Your position can be bolstered by the risk analysis. If there is a specific failure mode that can occur based on poor bonding strength then your job is done and the developers need to give you what the risk analysis says...
Designers always need to understand first the risk of injury and death. This will always scare someone into making a change...make sure senior management is aware that risks of injury and death fall on them as the ultimate decision makers....it's there skin!
