RED HAT UNVEILS ENTERPRISE EDITIONS OF LINUX
TRYING TO ACCELERATE the adoption of Linux in enterprise accounts, Red Hat on Tuesday announced its Red Hat Enterprise Edition product line as part of a strategy that will see the company working hand in glove with leading application developers to test and integrate Linux-based solutions.
As part of the new initiative the company announced the Red Hat Linux Enterprise Editions for Oracle 8i database, Computer Associates' systems and storage management products, and RealNetwork's streaming video line.

CEBIT: WIRELESS NET, LINUX, WIN2000 TO TAKE CENTER STAGE
WIRELESS INTERNET, electronic commerce, stripped-down PCs, Linux, and Windows 2000 are some of the themes expected to take center stage at this year's CeBit exhibition, taking place Feb. 24 through March 1 in Hannover, Germany.
With some 7,500 exhibitors spread out over 408,839 square meters of floor space in 26 halls, the show can lay claim to the title of the world's largest IT event. Despite its mammoth size, however, the show maintains a distinctly German flavor. Although the exhibitors come from all over the world, with the Taiwanese contingent topping the list of international exhibitors, more than two-thirds of the 698,000 visitors that attended CeBit last year came from Germany.

RED HAT UNVEILS LINUX TOOLS FOR INTEL ITANIUM CHIP
RED HAT on Wednesday announced the availability of GNUPro tools for creating 64-bit applications on Intel's forthcoming Itanium processor. GNUPro is the commercial version of the open-source GNU software development tools, and the Itanium chip, formerly known as Merced, is expected to debut midyear. GNUPro tools for IA-64 include the IA-64 Linux source code and Red Hat's GNUPro compiler, according to a statement from Red Hat. The tools are available at https://www.cygnus.com ,. the company said.

MOTOROLA AIMS HIGH AVAILABILITY LINUX AT TELCOS
MOTOROLA'S COMPUTER GROUP in May will begin to ship High Availability Linux, which it calls HA Linux, as a new embedded computing platform for telecommunications providers.
According to Motorola Computer Group, the platform is the first Linux product for carrier-grade networking, wireless, and Internet applications that has high availability needs with little downtime. The product is aimed at operation administration and maintenance platforms, IP (Internet protocol) gateways, gatekeepers, home-location registers, and call servers, the Motorola group said in a statement on Monday.

ADIC'S SHARED FILE SYSTEM TO EXTEND SANS TO LINUX
U.S. STORAGE VENDOR Advanced Digital Information (ADIC) is adding support for the Linux operating system in its shared file system CentraVision, the company announced today. The move means that users of Linux servers will be able to use SANs (storage area networks) to share applications data with users of Unix and Windows NT servers.
CentraVision currently supports Microsoft's Windows NT and Silicon Graphics' Unix operating system Irix. ADIC expects to demonstrate CentraVision's Linux support at a number of trade shows in April and plans to release Linux support in the software in May, according to Steve Whitner, ADIC marketing director, speaking in a phone interview Monday. Next up will be support for Sun Microsystems's Unix OS Solaris some time later this year, he added.

SAS BEING PORTED TO LINUX
INSPIRED BY ITS growing acceptance among leading industry players as well as its business partners, the SAS Institute announced Tuesday it will port its flagship data-warehousing and decision-support product over to Linux.
Company officials Tuesday said they will ship a production version of SAS software for Red Hat Linux on Intel hardware by the end of the year. They added, however, that they also will deliver versions of the product for all of the distributions by the major Linux suppliers including Caldera, SuSE, TurboLinux, and Corel.

RED HAT TAKES HEAT OVER CERTIFICATION
PALM DESERT, CALIF. - Criticism of Linux vendor Red Hat for its certification policies ended a debate on Friday called "The Future of the Operating System" here at the System Builder's Summit.
Hosted by a panel of representatives from Red Hat, Caldera Systems, Gartner Group, and Novell, what began as a general overview for the need for more applications to run on the popular open-source operating system closed with heated charges from several audience members who claimed that certification by Linux-vendor Red Hat is both expensive and risky.

VENDORS FORGE EMBEDDED LINUX CONSORTIUM
REPRESENTATIVES FROM SOME 30 vendors have formed the Embedded
Linux Consortium, known as ELC, to promote Linux-based embedded
applications, the group announced on Thursday.
