Calibrating length scales

We have length scales on quite a bit of our machines, and I am wondering if anyone else here struggles with calibrations for your length scales when your measurement system has alot of different tooling AND the end plates cannot touch to set a zero point because there are roller mounting plates in-between that reside on an NSK rail. If everything ran off of a simple center on both sides, it wouldnt be an issue. A while back I was wondering if there were some sort of laser system that I could set up on the headstock side (static side) and one on the tailstock, and just check as I move it farther away. I dont want to have to create a ton of masters for all different types of tooling, so I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and what were your options to fix it?
