AS9100, Stage 1 unsatisfactory ratings for documentation information references

What are the implications for an AS9100 Stage 1 Audit Report (9101 Form 1) resulting in "unsatisfactory" ratings for an organization being unable to confirm documentation information references to the AS9100 clauses? Can the audit proceed to Stage 2 with such unsatisfactory ratings, or is the organization required to revise its command media to prove conformity to the individual clauses ("satisfactory" ratings) before the audit can proceed to Stage 2? In this situation, the organization claims its business processes are in conformity to the AS9100 clause requirements despite not having the associated command media, changing its command media just to satisfy the audit is not desired, and conformity would be evidenced from observations, reviews of records, and/or interviews conducted during the Stage 2 audit.

You are asking for major nonconformities during stage 2. If an issue was identified as lacking in stage 1 and you don’t resolve them, you will be written up.

Stage one audits don’t generate NC’s but the lack of readiness should be clearly identified. It should be unnecessary to remind people that AS9100, differently than ISO 9001, has explicit requirements for documentation and there is no wiggle room.

It would be nice to know what the report said.

As an example, AS9100 4.4.2 states; "The organization shall establish and maintain documented information that includes:..."

If there is no documented information, then this is a non-conforming condition.

If the auditor stated that you need a document for each clause, simply reply that you are not aware of the requirement, and ask them to read it to you. If they can't find the requirement, but keep iterating you need something (without clarifying the requirement), consider escorting them out of the building and sending an email to your registrar explaining the situation.

Copy on the AS9100 requirement for documented information.

To better calibrate my concern for AS9100 clauses that have detailed sub-element requirements, please describe the threshold for the auditor determining either a Stage 1 "unsatisfactory" rating or a Stage 2 major nonconformity. For example, the 9101 Form 1 has a single checkbox to account for the AS9100 clause 8.5.1 Control of Production and Service Provision which has an a-q list of required sub-clause items. Will the auditor seek documented information for evidence of conformity to all 19 listed items and consequently note in the comment field all deficient items needing resolution in Stage 2, or will the auditor confirm just a sample of the 19 items?
